you gel with who you gel with and as initially it's about words and pics you have no choice but to judge a person on that, in reality when you meet some people they are totally unrecognisable as the person you interact with here, sometimes they are exactly that person

Ooh this is a hard question, I can see who is hot (to me) generally, from their profiles. Hottest brain is a tougher call. I'll have a think, it's not necessarily the most intellectual person I would choose, but maybe someone with a quick wit.

I'm yet to read any deep thinking on here.

I do think that some of the more light-hearted posters have a hidden depth, and I'm not drawn to the "mouthpiece" types.

I like quietly confident people, who say a lot, in a few words.

I did the mensa home test but concluded that it's a scam to get you to pay for the formal one. I tested 15 points above any other tests I'd done which seemed convenient.

There’s a lot of smart cookies out there. Most don’t necessarily post on the ‘intellectual debate threads’.

Many that do aren’t as smart as they think as you can drive a tank through many of their arguments or they’re hugely contradictory.

Use of big words may make some people literate but it doesn't necessarily translate into intelligence

There’s also people that are intelligently sly and manipulative - they use their intelligence in a negative way or to put others down. These are the people I tend to dislike the most on Fab!

Anyway, I digress! To answer the question : someone who’s smart but balanced in her opinions (sometimes I agree with her, others I disagree) is Fringe Benefits. I like her style.

Now now, no need for sniping!

There are different appearances of intellect in my opinion, to some it may be articulation, to some it may be reasoned debate, others a quick wit or a retention of knowledge.

Just as we all find different faces attractive I think we all get drawn to different displays of intelligence.

Intelligence can be subjective ... my dad was off the planet intelligent but in life we all thought he was thick!! Was a shock to find out ... some people's intelligence is what they can make or mend ... or make people laugh. But it can't be simply measured in paper qualifications or earnings!! Too many variables and personal tastes ...

"Intelligence can be subjective ... my dad was off the planet intelligent but in life we all thought he was thick!! Was a shock to find out ... some people's intelligence is what they can make or mend ... or make people laugh. But it can't be simply measured in paper qualifications or earnings!! Too many variables and personal tastes ... "

I agree with you, intelligence represents itself in different ways. I've known some startlingly intelligent people with no common sense whatsoever, it's just how their brains are wired!

"There’s a lot of smart cookies out there.

I couldn't agree more Dan

There's often a significant difference between what might be described as intellectual intelligence and emotional intelligence, though of course the two aren't mutually exclusive. I'm attracted to people who demonstrate thoughtfulness in the purest sense of the word - those who have the courage of their convictions and express their opinions (even if I don't always agree with them) in a balanced and inclusive manner, and who don't use 'big' words for the sake of it where simpler terms would do just as well and engage more readers. The same people respond to questions and criticism with good grace, patience and consistency which, for me, is the mark of true intelligence. Like you, I can't bear so-called intelligent (well, they regularly like to inform us they are anyway) forumites who belittle others by drawing attention to - for example - relatively irrelevant crap like spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, or who use their quick 'wit' and greater vocabulary to trash another's opinion, or who cleverly convey 'innocent' insults which, if challenged, could be denied as unintended.

There's a fine line between decorum and manners and being all things to all people.

I like those that don't pussy foot around bad arguments but go for the jugular when needs be.

Erudition is the finest form of intelligence.

In a town Fab forgot

Depends how you're measuring it.

The ability to copy and paste someone else's years of research into a thread doesn't cut it.

The ability to extrapolate your own thoughts and views from that does, even if you're own review and research disagrees or concurs with the intial premise.

I've probably not said that eloquently enough......

I find that those people who simply comment on every conversation on the forum are frequently sad, needy, lonely and incredibly superfluous to any real need.

Worse still if their logic is contorted or their comments are supercillious.

Sadly there comes a time in some folks life when they are themselves superfluous to the general population. They have no more than side comments and pathetic bragging left and think others might be impressed. It is awful that their carer simply leaves their mobile phone or laptop unattended
