The coil!

Having the coil fitted this morning and am a little nervous about the side effects etc and how long I might be out of action for.

Anyone care to share their experiences? Xx

I was fine for sex straight after...didnt have any ill effects after the actual fitting itself.

However it didnt suit me and it dislodged... tried it a couple of times.. both times its caused me to much discomfort.. HOWEVER, it works for lots of women. just not for me

I had one on and off for years and had very little side affects, the only one thing I would say is on a couple of occasions, Andy's words "he got impaled on it", if you know what I mean!! Still didn't cause me any discomfort though lol. I would highly recommend you give it a go, can always have it removed again if it doesn't suit you.

I don't see how that can happen as an IUD or coil sits inside the womb and not in the vagina and mens cocks don't go inside a womans womb.

The fitting is a little uncomfortable but not painful. You may get irregular bleeding. If you are having a Mirena coil which combines hormones then bleeding for a while after is common. I have a Mirena and had bleeding for 10 days afterwards but haven't had any bleeding or periods since, that was 18 months ago. Bleeding in my case was not heavy.

Its an individual thing on how our bodies react but maybe expect irregularities for approx 2 weeks for your body to settle down. Hope it goes well

Was with long term partners and not swinging when I had one... so no stories on the condoms but my ex could definately fill the strings...

I had my first one in for a short time before it got dislodged.. and my 2nd one I had to have removed due to constant cramping..and the pain... both times partner could feel it..and it made sex uncomfy for me..

hmmm interesting ty hunny

i'm looking to get one to get rid of my periods as they have got so irregular, sadly in a getting closer together not further apart way, that we can't plan any fun and is seriously disrupting our own sex life its driving me batty

got an appointment at hossie in a weeks time to try and get to bottom of the problem so will get more info there as to ways to get rid of the buggers

get the depo injection, i have had no periods since i started it, some women get lighter periods and then they completely stop, some do get heavier but its only 3 months and you can combine it with the pill if your periods get heavier to try to manage them until it runs out.

worth a try before a more permanent solution if you are worried. i have only heard bad things about the coil and the implant, but i am sure they must work for some women otherwise they wouldnt offer them lol

Don't forget that all women react differently to having an IUD fitted. My first time was definitely an experience, and I had it removed three days later due to having pains down my leg. Don't know whether the IUD was the cause, but I didn't have the pains in my leg before the fitting and once it was removed they stopped.

The second one I had fitted was done via the hospital using an ultrasound system. They tell you that within 6 months you will stop having a period. After mine was fitted I was having a period for a week, which got lighter, and then spotting sometime during the other three weeks. All very frustrating. 10 months down the line, I am just beginning to not have periods.

this is my thire this one took a couple+of months to settle down. take two paracetamel before it hurts for a few seconds. you get a bit of bleeding and a bit of period pain. ive only had one guy get caught on it although some can feel it

I had a non hormonal coil about ten years ago but made my already heavy periods unbearable. I now have the mirena coil in and have done for nearly 3 years. No periods, very occasional spotting, no side effects. My ex could feel the wires if he pushed in a bit too hard but served him right. Getting both of them fitted was nearly completely painless, did have a bit of cramping though but a few painkillers sorted it though. Definatly my favourite form of contraception.

I had marina coil years .... then had to have a new one which come out my first priod i think ... could have been my tampons made it come out thay said ..going back to see if i can have one again . my old one i loved it ,, I had a life .

Darren had 2 experience's with his ex who had the coil and said you could feel the coil inside her each time but 2x it was more prominent and caused both him and partner discomfort.

i am a wimp...seriously ..which is quite amusing as in the right circumstances i can take intense pain.

i found having the coil put in painful, but bareable, the nurse distracted me by having a conversation abou tmy nails

there is no way i could have had sex for a few days, i was spotting blood and too sore. i think kev and i left it a week. i would not have had sex with anyone else as i was too concerned about it hurting.

However once things settled down i have never looked back.

Unless the penis goes inside the cervix (almost impossible) then it's the strings they are feeling, not the coil. Also, I'm on my third coil and my periods have never actually ceased. Got a lot lighter and more regular, but I still get one every month.

Implant or injection are better options if you want to stop your periods.

Pain for a couple of hours after...but I had a nice night with my ex after and no problems what so ever. No you can't rip condoms!

The injection is good....but with it you can pile on the weight with it.

The coild stopped my periods for the first two years....but now getting light periods monthly

depends where Dr cuts the wires, two very thin ones, but yes depend on the person your playing with, but a small percentage have spilt and i've also had people say they felt something normally the wires not the coil itself

I wouldn't be without mine, had no problems for years then it fell out, had a replacement fitted and that came out within weeks, So i had to have small op to remove something (can't remember the word), since then had a new one fitted and all is good again.

I had the coil for about five years,suited me well had no side effects or pain,but it dislogded and i now have a 3 year old.

Good points and bad to them all i`d say,so only you can decide really whats best xxx

Bouncey there is no way the coil can be felt. The proper term is Intrauterine device, ie being inside the uterus (womb). The coil does not sit in the vagina, it cannot be touched by a cock or rip condoms. There are stringd which sit in the vagina, these can be felt if you put your fingers inside and a guy may be able to feel these, but they are not sharp and wouldn't cut cocks or condoms.

Some ladies do have problems though, the body can expel a foreign body so they can come out, some ladies have to have a stitch in the cervix to keep a pregnancy viable don't they, and if a lady bleeds a lot then it could expel. The likelihood of this happening whilst having sex may be limited as usually ladies would have cramps or be bleeding and would many women want to be having sex whilst not feeling 100% healthy.

On the whole there are no major problems but always speak to your own GP if worried

Of course its a good point that if ladies are bleeding a lot and the coil does dislodge then it may not be noticed if there are clots in the blood (sorry for goryness). If it comes out and you don't feel it, you won't be protected against pregnancy.

Check your strings regularly I'd say though its not a common occurence that coils fall out but of course it can happen

Well ladies, just got back from having it done and am in a lot of pain at the mo with what feels like severe period pains and cramps! Just dosed up on pain killers so hoping it settles down soon

Sure you will be fine and things will settle down. The point I was making earlier I was talking a lot of years ago, the first coil I had was after my daughter who will be 33 this year. Sure things have come a long way since then. Think one I had was called Lippes Loop (probably got that wrong) and there where no hormones just the coil. Still think it was the best method for me, bit of discomfort at first but then not having to worry about forgetting pills, which I did frequently before!!!!

I'm onto my second mirena and wouldn't be without it. I didn't have any periods for 5 years with the first and occasionally have very light show now.

I had the old copper coil in for 5 years i had it removed in the fifth year as i started tohave irregular bleeding, had a break of six months then had the mirena fitted, it was a little uncomfortable but the more you tense the more it hurts...at first with both coils i bled for a couple of weeks but this soon settled down..i had no problems with it as such my periods even stopped, but i started to get pains in joints, terrible mood swings,so i googled it and saw that alot of women too experienced the same symptoms as me, so off to the docs i went got it out and went on the mini pill, As above all women are different and you either love it or hate it, but a few weeks later my pains had gone and i had become human again, Although i was a psycho, i am going to consider having another one put in when i start going through the dredded change, the good thing about it is you can have it removed when ever..

Just read this with lots of interest...I'm due to get a Mirena coil fitted very soon to help deal with the problem of ovarian cysts. Sorry its a little yucky but due to have one cyst removed via surgery and then have the coil fitted at the same time. Been dealing with issues off and on for nearly 2 years now and seriously affects any playing as can be in agony afterwards...so loving the thought that it might give me a life back! Really positive comments! Xx

I have had a few and have to say had much fewer side effects than other methods. Did find with the last one for some reason that I had very painful cramps once a month, not heavy periods just pain. My partner could also feel the strings on occasions and found it a bit off putting. Think it really depends on your individual body shapes as to how it works for you. I am using the persona monitor now which tracks your hormones, and other methods on red days. Has been four months now and touch wood no babies and feel myself again as not on hormones.

Good luck, and just keep trying...we are all different and at the end of the day there is going to be either some discomfort/side effects or inconvenience when trying to stop your body doing what it wants to!
