Really!??? Don't forget some people cannot spell to save their lives, or are Dyslexic, or simply rely on spellcheckers.

Problems also exist when 2 words sound the same but can be spelt in different ways.

So, unless you write everything down when planning your meet and during it too, why does it matter?

If it was for a job application or something formal, then that's different!

Really!??? Don't forget some people cannot spell to save their lives, or are Dyslexic, or simply rely on spellcheckers.

I don't get too hung up about people being able to spell or not really as it has no reflection on who they are (with the exception of "text speak", slang or obvious crap spellings "wud, cuz")

Having said that "been instead of being" irks me a little.

Badly! I'm sure older generations will be aware of how schooling when we were younger, taught the importance of spelling and in turn, writing correctly.

If what you say is correct, how good is that towards future literacy levels?

As long as I can understand what's written I don't mind too much. I have noticed a trend towards writing "his" instead of "he's" which does make my eye twitch a bit. I've also noticed people using "to which" out of context so that what they've written makes no sense.

I can appreciate that other people's spelling and punctuation have be difficult, though can't understand the loathing. Really, is it that important?

For me I can have a great deal of trouble with words with six or more letters. Reading them, writing them, what one reads as ABCDEF my brain helpful converts to ACEFDB.

I'm forty two, I've put up with this since I began to read. If it causes one difficulty reading a profile of some one they never have a chance of meeting, I have a polite f- off for them.

I'm sorry, but it would appear that teaching standards have not slipped as some may think they have.

I have a 10 year old (almost 11) in his last year at primary school and he is very good when it comes to spelling. One of his friends not so.

My son knows the difference between our and are, between his and he's, your and you're, there, their and they're and all the other, very common 'mistakes' that a lot of grown ups seem to care very little about.

Those who can't be bothered to get it right take the attitude that 'it doesn't matter so long as you can be understood' whilst completely failing to appreciate the message they are giving other people anout themselves.

So often people throw up the dyslexia excuse, which I find totally insulting to genuine sufferers of the condition - I do actually have a personal friend who is dyslexic.

It's when I read a profile and I know what the person wants to say but their auto correct has come up with a totally different word or inserted some random letters or other.

Yet they just leave it. Don't they notice? Do they not care? It's nothing to do with literacy, it's like they have no pride in their "shop window" and puts me right off.

It bothers me, and I can't entirely help that it bothers me. I do (except in these sorts of threads) generally keep it to myself. It does come into my assessment of people, though. (from "everyone makes mistakes" through lazy to "I genuinely have no idea what you're saying and I can't be bothered figuring it out"). Dyslexia reads somewhat differently to bad spelling or lazy, I find. The former also tend to care more, whereas the latter display an irritating devil may care attitude towards the only method we have to communicate with each other in this medium.

The one that grinds my gears is clicky. If the chat room is clicky, hit mute or get your computer checked out. Cliquey is a different question.

I make a lot of mistakes when I type. A lot.

One reason is the lighting on the mobile phone. IRL,I can spot a pattern mistake/fault on a wall paper print or in a weave fabric twenty paces away in seconds. Now, put it on a screen, especially a mobile phone screen and it's very very difficult for me to find it. It's the same with typing on a computer screen. I usually have to type, print, then edit the hardcopy. It's slow, but it's accurate.

I have spoken to my optician about this. She shrugged her shoulders... I guess it's something I have to deal with.

Another issue I have is with the keyboard on my mobile. I will type out what I want to type. Autocorrect will change it to something else. I will go back and change it then carry on typing. However, auto correct will change it back! So when I review it, there will be some mistakes but more often than not, I won't spot all of them until it's posted.

Sometimes I will copy the post, delete the post and repost a corrected version. Sometimes, I just can't be bothered...

I could proof read 25 times on an electronic screen, and there would still be a mistake.

I can speed read on paper at 900 wpm, but it's not so good on a screen.

I only understood half of that, but I'd judge someone for sloppy professional communication regardless of their trade. On here, I'm not shagging someone I don't understand.

The amazing thing about society is that we all have different skills and we work together to do things other people can't. Fancy that! We do, however, have to be able to communicate in a common language to do so.

Really!??? Don't forget some people cannot spell to save their lives, or are Dyslexic, or simply rely on spellcheckers.

Problems also exist when 2 words sound the same but can be spelt in different ways.

So, unless you write everything down when planning your meet and during it too, why does it matter?

If it was for a job application or something formal, then that's different!

As I say, dyslexia reads differently to lazy. I can't always spot it, but I often can.

I'm more tolerant of spelling mistakes than I'm being perceived to be, I think (and if it's possibly dyslexia then I make the effort). It does annoy me, but I don't write someone off on that basis unless I can't figure out what they're saying without at least a few minutes of concerted effort.

We all have our things that bother us. Spelling happens to be one of mine.

Im with you on this one lovely, i have been diagnosed with dyslexia. It does my head in when people pick me up on not writing the word correctly, its a mistake, get over it. Rant over.

I'm sorry, but it would appear that teaching standards have not slipped as some may think they have.

I have a 10 year old (almost 11) in his last year at primary school and he is very good when it comes to spelling. One of his friends not so.

My son knows the difference between our and are, between his and he's, your and you're, there, their and they're and all the other, very common 'mistakes' that a lot of grown ups seem to care very little about.

Those who can't be bothered to get it right take the attitude that 'it doesn't matter so long as you can be understood' whilst completely failing to appreciate the message they are giving other people anout themselves.

So often people throw up the dyslexia excuse, which I find totally insulting to genuine sufferers of the condition - I do actually have a personal friend who is dyslexic.

My spelling isn't perfect and I'm sure a lot of other people on here are the same

To be honest there are a lot more important things to worry about rather than a few misspelled words on a profile

Spelling rarely bothers me, there are so many genuine reasons for it, particularly dyslexia, autocorrect and the silly tiny keyboard. Grammar makes me see red
