Baby it's Cold Outside

The song called Baby it's Cold Outside (Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews did a version). Some feminists want it banned and some radio station has taken it off their Christmas playlist in case it offends. Some feminist believe it's a song about sexual assault..

Agree or disagree?

There’s a lot of films, songs etc with unseemly undertones. Let’s have a little look at the wife beating in Carousel, the wife snatching in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the underage attraction in the song Young Girl.

Probably good to talk about these things, I reckon. Sadly, it’s still a very hummable along tune and it’s nostalgic and lovely for many.

I wonder if we found some tunes/films that have moved to being unacceptable now, if there was the same outcry at the point of transition?

I do like Cerys’ version though.

Disagree. I read about this and the song was written years ago and it's just about a girl who doesn't want to leave, not about her being forced to do anything. Fairytale of new York is getting a hammering too because of the word "faggot" being offensive. I mean, really??

Not quite, it’s from the ‘49 film Neptune’s Daughter and it’s a little more coercive date rap*y than you’re implying,

Still like the Cerys version though.

This song has always had that vibe but its only the last few years people have noticed coz of political correctness. Think it was Robot Chicken who did the Bill Cosby sketch, or was it Bill Clinton? Might have been two different shows. Family Guy did it with 60s crooner. The only reason they all did that was becuse of the way the song was suddenly being talked about.

Do you not think that it is a bigger comment on our society that we see all this depravity and filth in what is essentially an innocent song?

Where will it end?

Banning songs like:

The Stones - Brown sugar “Taste good like a young girl should”

The Knack - My Sharona “Such a dirty mind, always get it up for the touch of the younger kind”

Aerosmith - Walk this way “Schoolgirl sweetie with a classy kinda sexy little skirt’s climbin’ way up her knee”

Enrique Iglesias - Escape “You can run, you can hide but you can’t escape my love”

Maroon 5 - She will be loved “I know where you hide, alone in your car”

The Police - Every breath you take “Every step you take, I’ll be watching you”

Maybe I pay too much attention to lyrics

Radio DoGooder have also banned the following, for the reasons stated:

ELVIS PRESLEY: Wear My Ring Around Your Neck - Forced sado-masochism play. The title says it all – no further explanation needed.

JOHN LENNON: It’s So Hard - Song about the effects of Viagra; “It’s so hard, it’s really hard, sometimes I feel like going down”.

THE EVERLY BROTHERS: Wake Up Little Suzie - The lyrics clearly suggest that 'Suzie' has been drugged and forced to watch porn with her boyfriend at his house, and his parents have caught them having returned home from a party. “We both fell sound asleep…..the movie’s over, it’s 4 o’clock and we’re in trouble deep”.

DAVID BOWIE: John I’m Only Dancing - The opening lyrics are clearly a bully coercing his girlfriend to give up veganism; “Well Annie’s pretty neat, she always eats her meat”.

BING CROSBY: White Christmas - Racial segregation.

This is, of course, satire, in case anyone really believes it!

If you watch the full song on YouTube, there is also a reverse scenario where a woman is trying to seduce a man. Only the fist half of the song is the man trying to seduce the woman.

They conveniently leave that part out because it doesn't fit their political narrative.

Things are getting stupid now. Soon we won't be able to sneeze without upsetting or offending someone.

Had an argument on social media a few months ago about people's titles. They had miss and mrs removed from a form at their place of work and had mx added instead. I have no issues on how someone wants to identify or dress or anything, but why take away commonly used options? Ms, to me, would make me feel a lot older than I am.

Listen to a lot of songs and you'll find phrases that you hadn't noticed. People need to get over themselves.

Or have people shout down discussing as a way of undermining anything that wobbles a fragile male ego, if you’re going to sweepingly generalise anything “girl power” like that, let’s sweepingly generalise back the other way too - but then that undermines discussion, doesn’t it...

You decide - here's the lyrics:

I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)

I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)

This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)

So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)

My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)

My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)

So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)

But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)

The neighbours might think (baby, it's bad out there)

Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)

I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)

To break this spell (i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)

I ought to say, no, no, no sir (mind if I move in closer?)

At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)

I really can't stay (oh baby don't hold out)

But baby, it's cold outside

I simply must go (but baby, it's cold outside)

The answer is no (but baby, it's cold outside)

Your welcome has been(how lucky that you dropped in)

So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)

My sister will be suspicious (gosh your lips look delicious)

My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)

My maiden aunts mind is vicious (gosh your lips are delicious)

But maybe just a cigarette more (never such a blizzard before)

I've gotta get home(but baby, you'd freeze out there)

Say lend me a coat(it's up to your knees out there)

You've really been grand (i thrill when you touch my hand)

But don't you see? (how can you do this thing to me?)

There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)

At least there will be plenty implied (if you got pneumonia and died)

I really can't stay (get over that old out)

Baby, it's cold

Baby, it's cold outside
