A thing of the past?

I already believe Friends with benefits and fuck buddies will replace marriage and monogamy as the norm in the not to distant future.

Anyone else think this so?

I think monogamy is still the norm and will continue. Swinging is very much a small minority sport!

Civil partnerships rather than marriage might be how things change though.

You can have marriage without monogamy. Just because you commit to that one person and outwardly seem a married couple doesn't mean you can't have a open relationship.

I think judging from the couples profiles that marriage doesn't necessarily mean limiting yourself to the one individual sexually

As a divorcee I no longer believe in marriage as a sanctity, I was christened a Catholic before any of you attack me!!!

Objectively; Marriage in its sacred sense was over due to Henry Vlll... if you don’t know your history, you don’t belong on here!

Subjectively; This day in age, people are easily replaceable, we’ve come to love things and use people...

Morally; there’s no room for high ground judgement here on Fab. No one is better than anyone or worse than anyone...

Personally;

1) a second marriage is NOT an option for me. I had the wedding I wanted and I couldn’t beat that venue so I’d feel a little anticlimactic and worried the groom would pick up on that, so rather avoid that scenario and causing pain to another I’m meant to love.

2) just from what I know of people even before Fab the concept of marriage is dead and you don’t need to be married for:

Communication

Trust

Loyalty

Respect

Honesty

All Open Relationships and Polyamory won’t work without:

Communication

Trust

Loyalty

Respect

Honesty

And all monogamous situations from Fuck Buddies to relationships still need varying forms of:

Communication

Trust

Loyalty

Respect

Honesty

That’s my take on it anyway... x

No, marriage isn't a thing of the past. I think a lot of people still crave the deep intimacy that can only be built up from long term relationships. Whether this is achieved via marriage, civil partnership or mutual commitment made privately is up to individuals. FWB and FB can't replace that.

Marriage is viewed differently by many nowadays, it was unheard of for instance to have your children attending your wedding unless it was your second marriage.

Monogamy is still the expected norm for at least one party when entering a relationship unless agreed otherwise beforehand.

I think it's easy to assume swinging is common when you mix with other swingers. It's not.

No because nobody can ever find a fwb or fb

I think people still love the idea of marriage as it shows that committment to each other, but it doesn't really protect against any infidelities that can occur with or without it. Living together is a bigger thing than an fwb arrangement, I do believe people generally want more than casual things allow, and why not if you like that person.

Just my observations.

I find it interesting that you automatically associate marriage with monogomy.

But neither will die out anytime soon, and certainly not ion the "not to distant future", just have look at society and how it is structured. Look at the people you work with, your friends your neighbours, you honestly think that they will walk away from relationships for a world of FWBs?

Swingers, the non-monogamous, the poly-amorous, are not the norm and while it's increasingly more accepted it would be generations before it becomes the norm and would require a huge social shift from where we are now where the media, the givernmant, the church, our education system all preach that marriage and monogomy are what everyone should aspire too

Central

The trend is towards it diminishing in importance but it's still - apart from civil partnerships - important for many legal and asset purposes within relationships. Should common law marriages gain an equality for those benefits, then marriage would lessen its grip on western society imo. Equal marriage has rebalanced things a little, in its favour.

I think a marriage can be what you want it to be. A union.

I swore I'd never get married but I would, whether it be in the conventional sense or some other ceremonial event, providing the vows that were made were relevant to the relationship. I think there's something quite magical about 2 people who are so connected they wish to wed.

Nothing wrong with being sensible about it and having pre-nup thingies.

"... Nothing wrong with being sensible about it and having pre-nup thingies."

Civil Partnership will evolve to become the non religious version of marriage sometime soon. It will finally allow non religious people of same and mixed sex couples to enter into a long term financially secure partnership and to have a clear way of separating in a fair way. I think it will become the norm over time and will be a good thing.

"Reading this thread makes me think romance really is dead..."

In my opinion, it died years ago... blame technology!

No one I know took a picture of their cock, on a 35mm waited 24 hours to develop it at boots then post it via Royal Mail saying “wanna fuck”

Mainstream! Even Fab is mainstream now with most looking for a meaningless cheap thrill as opposed to what swinging really is about.

I still maintain my stance, I still have an open mind... I will maintain my standards and respect for anyone who approaches me in kind.

Manners cost nothing... half of these on here think foreplay is fingering a bird’s minge on a bar stool

You can still have freedom if you marry the right person, are respectful and honest, as many on this site prove.

I don't want freedom. Its vastly over rated when you compare it to the lack of freedom which involves coming home to someone who understands that you do actually need 50 scarves

In my limited experience of life but lots of experience of longterm FWBs ... it's not the way forward and never will. Human beings are not designed to exist healthily single and life actually isn't designed to be about sex, just sex and should never be - it's actually not (mentally) healthy . If you're quoting history then we are naturally tribal and are designed to be so, and actual marriage has only been a very small part of our evolution ... whereas partnerships have always been since records began

Katie has an Irish mother, so has an Irish passport. Given brexit, I thought it might be worth getting married to get my hands on an EU passport. Unfortunately it turns out you only get an Irish passport by marriage if you live in Ireland for a year, so, yes, no good reason to get married...

That sucks.

I have friends that have been together 30 years and they're thinking of getting married just for legal reasons- as when one dies so they don't have money/ will issues. They love each other though. That's one good reason I suppose.
