Work stresses

Currently in a really stressful workplace and it's hard to leave due to financial situation and lack of alternative suitable jobs that would be less hassle - I'm dreading it daily and feel exhausted. Can't shut off in evenings and even tonight just feel like im coming down from a huge argument!

What advice do people have for curing such stresses? Have previously done mindfulness courses but didn't take to it and I already exercise a few times a week.

TIA hive-mind!

We had mental health awareness training at work, the main thing I took from it was to try and focus on the positive stuff you do. So if you work packing boxes of stuff make it into a little game where you try to beat the day before, give yourself something to win about.

If you are hating your job that much then you need to get out. I know it’s tough and a hard decision to do but maybe look for a job in something else.

The worst thing you can do is let it get on top of you, stress leads to an awful lot of much more serious mental health conditions and you need to be careful

Maybe try talking to your boss or HR or occupational health and explain your worries and everything and they should try to help you

Talk to your employers in the first instance, you wed to resolve what's causing you the stress in the first place.

Do you know exactly what is causing your stress and is do you think it is possible for your organisation to reduce the stress. The starting point would be to talk to your line manager (assuming they are not part of the problem) and or HR and get them to do a Stress Risk Assessment.

Can you find ways to switch off in the evening and weekends. Don't take work home (don't allow the office to contact you), finish on time may help in this process.

I find exercise is a good way to relieve stress as is finding something to occupy your mind, something creative such as writing or photography.

Stay away from alcohol that only adds to the stress

School teacher - terrible behaviour of the kids. Inept management. Rampant bullying. Kids threatening to stab trainee teachers, I've had to drag one kid out my classroom and block another from storming the room to beat up someone who had called them a name!

See if the company has an Employee Assistance program in place, if they have use it.

If not you need to talk to a manager, they have to put something in place to deal with this.

I had the worst year at work last year thanks to an arrogant incompetent colleague who thought she was too good to be line managed by me and went and 'sacked' me. Worst thing was my own line manager and the top boss undermined me in my role and allowed her to 'sack' me though I had done nothing wrong.

It gave out the message that my willingness to take my role seriously was not appreciated and it was ok for people in the team not to do what they are employed to do.

I have a very strong work ethic so all of this was really demoralising and depressing as there was nothing I could do about the situation. The one thing I found that helped was to have very clear boundaries about what I would and wouldn't do at work. e.g. I wasn't going to get sucked into training the incompetent girl in how to do anything since it was no longer in my remit. I learned to say no to things I didn't want to do or wouldn't be appreciated for and also to let go a little and not care so much about what I do.

Hopefully your situation isn't as bad and its something management or HR will step in and help resolve. If not, then maybe trying to evaluate where you need to draw your lines to maintain your own sanity could help.

Worthing

In evenings settle down with low lights and battery candles...maybe a film or boot. Just relax and try to stay away from phone/pc/laptop/tablet.

been very stressful for me the last 4 months.

myself and 2 friends have started building bikes to order and it has been a nightmare to get going.

15 hours a day, doing another full time job as well as answering the phone for my business has been really testing.

but finally, after many calls with japan and talking to a dealer we have a deal in place to build some bikes for consideration of a major motorcycle company using their engines.

so hopefully, this is going to take off and we hope to have the first one finished by jan early feb.

been a lot of angry shouting at each other, throwing tools and going home angry as hell.

but each day begins and ends with group man hugs because we know what we all want to achieve.

It does sound stressful OP. I think it's time to leave that job unless there's support available to help you deal with it. I realise it's going to be hard for the reasons you say.

If you're still committed to teaching and there are no better jobs in the area then perhaps a fresh start elsewhere?

Unfortunately I image there is little that the School can do where there are pupils involved other than removing you from the classes that are causing the most stress. If you are still committed to teaching (I have a couple of teacher friends and they say it can be rewarding) perhaps it is time to move on to another school. Try to look for the positive from your experiences and use them to your advantage in any future job searching.

The main difficulty leaving is that my specialism is in the arts and schools have cut back massively. I'm teaching English which carries huge workload pressures with marking and planning but im used to that part - but as it's not my specialism and I just do it whilst looking for a contract teaching my subject I tend to get these gigs a lot. I had 2 amazing years at my last school so this is just a bit sould destroying by comparison.

worrying how a school can be so bad.

Gonna stop posting now though as I don't want to bring people down! just needed a vent. Thanks for the words y'all!
