Fracking (fracturing) comes to the UK

A couple of weeks or so ago, it was announced fracking is coming to the UK, in the North.

This is something I've been aware of for a while, since there has been a great effort to stop this happening. But I haven't heard anything of it on here, even though this looks like a big deal.

So fracking is the nickname for fracturing, which is done to rock to extract shale gas, of which a large supply is alleged to be stuck under the North of England. Water, sand, plus a cocktail of extremely volatile chemicals are pumped at high pressure (2000psi!) to crack everything open, and get the gas.

The problem is, of the mixture pumped down, only 40-70% is being recovered, meaning the rest gets dispersed into the land where it seeps up over time.

Interested to hear (read) thoughts on this, since it's much more direct and closer to home than trying to understand if there's anything funny going on with the Mars missions or not.

With global warming (climate change), and the environment in general, being such a hot potato, I think the ishoo of Fracking need addressing with the amount of pollution, cos it's coming soon, near you! (if you're up North)

If you live in the area, this needs watching. It is 1 hour long though...

David Cameron spoke, in his toffee voice, about how we must not listen to 'fearmongers' and 'conspiracy theorists (lol)'. I'm not sure where there are any theories in this. The clincher is that fracking has already happened in Australia, and the video shows the results.

Don't let PR, companies and parliament get away with telling you fibs and pretending to use science and scientists. Fracking is not safe.

Wanting my fellow fabbers to know, and QUADRILLA (the company primed to begin the process in the UK) to not get away with it so easily. Money is talking too much here.

Peace.

If a 1hr video is too much like tl:dw (too long didn't watch), here's the gist off the top of my head.

You will see that there is no fearmongering, because it has already happened elsewhere.

A large area of Australia has been affected by fracking. It seemed ok at first to have one well, or a few. 10,000 wells later and the land is ruined and life unbearable for residents. Moving out isn't so easy since property prices will have shrunk to almost nothing.

People are sick, the rain is largely affected. The rain is melting paint on cars, killing vegetation and poisoning the water. At one point, a tub of local water is taken. It is bubbling by itself. When a piece of rock or something is put in it, it fizzes up. This is the water supply.

The video goes into detail of how the government tells the public everything is safe, giving wrong (or twisted) figures, and how the science they use is actually not at all. The public are told 'scientists have assured us it is safe'. In reality, the process is simply 2 officials monitoring 10,000 wells. They then test just 43 wells to come to their conclusion. And those 43 are chosen by the corporation! Most of them are concreted up anyway, but the report comes through as "safe".

Another measure mentioned is the company sending off an end of week report, basically stating all is ok (even if it's really an apocalypse out there), and that is used to tell people all is well.

This is what we are going to be told, and already are, in the uk. These people are only interested in their money so I'd recommend not taking what they tell you at face value.

The official go ahead may have been given, but I believe QUADRILLA can still be stopped and given a hard enough time that they have to sing for their supper.

I'm a little confused by this thread as fracking was first attempted in the UK, in the north, a number of years ago and was brought to an almost immediate halt due to seismic activity (earthquakes) which could have been attributed to these operations and which prompted an investigation into the effects of fracking.

Fracking was resumed again a few months ago, with a similar outcome, but it seems that the government are determined to press ahead despite massive public opposition

I dare say Quadrilla wants a return on the campaign funding, they have already paid out on.

Sorry I didn't mean to be confusing...

It's just I heard on the radio Quadrilla are going ahead, despite all the opposition. I've had my eye on the protests for a while, including the actions of the heavy handed police, who are worryingly becoming more like state corporate police.

I don't know of any local person who is happy about this, even though the Beeb manage to wheel out "residents" who say yes.

I forgot about the seismic events. It seems to definitely be down to messing around with the ground. Locals were offered something like £10,000 compensation but had to sign a confidentiality agreement. Happily, unlike Cameron, Theresa and co, many had the integrity not to go for the money and refused.

I was just a bit surprised not to see it mentioned on here, since there is a huge environmental impact, and we keep hearing about climate change on the news.

I bet if this goes ahead and the land gets ruined, they will have the nerve to try to blame it on 'climate change'. Well hopefully, talking about it and more people being aware will lift the lid on that one.

I'm down South but this bothers me.
