So after starting a thread about how mind boggling space travel is , and admitting I don’t understand the physics behind it , I get responses along the line of “ there was a time was ignorance was something to be ashamed of , and now it’s worn as a badge of honour “ . And some clever dick quotes it , and says they don’t agree with much on the forums , but ain’t that the truth .

I suppose I should feel ashamed of my ignorance and sit quietly in the corner with a dunce hat on . But I can’t help but feel that it’s unecessary and cruel to pick on a dumbass like me , so I shan’t take it quietly .

Shame on you .

There is one thing you can rely upon with dicks and that is when they aren't arriving in your inbox in picture form lots of them are posting on here in the forums.

This place is anything but a helpful and supportive place most of the time. The only good thing about it is that it makes it so easy to block the right people.

Perhaps if you’d started the thread “Isn’t space travel wonderful/amazing, I wish I knew more about it” rather than dismissing it as a load of bollocks and doubting it even happens, people would be more sympathetic and informative

I had a similar one in a FB group today (about hang gliding of all things)

A proper snotty / smart arse response, but without any depth or substance

I replied along the lines of 'if you believe I am wrong, educate me. If you have more knowledge than me, educate me'

I'm totally up for being educated, just not for receiving side swipes from strangers

I merely had an opinion , and I’ve researched it a lot over the past few days .

I don’t think it warrants such comments .

I wasn’t looking for a sympathetic response , and there were plenty of informative comments made .

I’m the last person to complain unnecessarily , but when people put other people down suggesting they lack an education and are proud of it , something needs to be said . It’s rude .

Here’s what you said.

Although I don’t approve people being abusive

Regarding people’s abilities you post was pretty dismissive. Not even a smiley face to hint at humour.

The rules of physics that the Mars ship obeys are the same rules that govern the motor car, bike, aeroplane, boat and the earth. So you don’t have to fully understand physics to know the Mars lander is possible.

Quote

So apparently NASA has sent a ship to Mars , at speeds faster than a bullet , and it’s got there , landed , and now it’s taking selfies before drilling into the planet and sending us the info it gets .

Does anyone else think it’s a complete load of bollocks ? I mean seriously , it’s been travelling for over six months through millions of miles of unchartered terrain , yet there it is .

In my best Victor Meldrew voice “ I don’t believe it “ , and I really don’t .

Well as a topic it was brilliant and I for once refrained from taking the mick but it was a fascinating insight into Fab and some of the loons who populate it ( I don’t mean you by the way ) and it’s only when you realise that people believe these conspiracy theories that you start wondering about their mental wellbeing. Anyway I am off to the politics forum for another punch up

But that’s a statement of belief, which isn’t based on rational evidence. It’s like saying “I believe in god” or “I believe the earth is flat”.

If you don’t believe space travel happens I doubt anyone on here can convince you it does.

I think my final post on that thread said it all .

I found a suggestion from NASA that they could potentially get to Mars in three days before long . Traveling at 60,000 km per SECOND !

They could say anything and we would believe it , and ok , maybe I am a bit thick , but really ? How can the human brain comprehend that ?

Mine struggles to see how we sent a ship out doing the 140,000,000 miles in six months by just aiming it and then relying on gravity to propel it there . Yet we lose an aeroplane 38 minutes after it takes of between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing !

Hey ho

The Earth's gravity is used to propel the spacecraft to those speeds. It's a bit like the shot put. Because there's a vacuum in space there's no friction to slow the craft down. If it uses rockets and the gravitational pull of other planets in our solar system it will increase its speed to that amount. Does that help?

If you want to really blow your mind google relativity. Time and gravity interact, time slows down as velocity increases etc.

I don’t pretend to understand it, but I wouldn’t say I disbelieve it, because its been scientifically proven.

The distance to mars is nothing compared to the distance covered by the voyager missions:

Mathematics and the knowledge we've already gathered from previous space missions. It's not simple but it follows the laws of physics and mathematics. And not all missions were successful. But NASA and others learned from their failures.

Hey ho "

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. You know that bit where they fly at the sun and use stars' gravity to slingshot themselves around to go back in time? It's a bit like that but without aliens, time travel, and that godawful Chekov "wessel" bit.

We know the orbits of the planets and if you can calculate the placement of each body in the solar system then you can use all kinds of maths to figure out the trajectory that you would need to launch the payload to best use the gravity of each body to your advantage.

Hey ho

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. You know that bit where they fly at the sun and use stars' gravity to slingshot themselves around to go back in time? It's a bit like that but without aliens, time travel, and that godawful Chekov "wessel" bit.

We know the orbits of the planets and if you can calculate the placement of each body in the solar system then you can use all kinds of maths to figure out the trajectory that you would need to launch the payload to best use the gravity of each body to your advantage."

Maths was never my strong point .

I watch Star Trek , Star Wars and the like as if they are just a fantasy .

And this Mars mission seems like that too in my simple mind .

As for the plane thing? NASA doesn't keep track of planes. It was off course, over the ocean, and had people who were able to take control of it (i.e. Add an element of human error).

A space craft doesn't have a pilot, it's all pre-programmed with Mission Control able to send remote updates on-the-fly should anything need correction because someone is keeping an eye on it all the time.

If that plane went down over open ocean it's long gone by now. A black box can only transmit so far through water and only for so long in general.

I guess flying must seem like magic too OP? But it's all maths and physics. No need to understand it to trust in it.

I'll bow out now. Good luck with the reading.

I would say that is a reasonable and fair observation, not that it excuses or should encourage rude responses, though as some others have suggested, thecway it was put was more conspiracy theorist than simply expressing a lack of understanding and perhaps many of those who responded viewed as somewhat confrontational.

Mostly, they are fantasy. But in that particular instance the imagery is useful for the explanation.

Look up "?Oumuamua's hyperbolic trajectory over the Solar System" and the first result should be half way down a Wikipedia article with an image of the comets' trajectory through our system. Notice how it comes in, slings around the sun, and back out again. Sending probes and other craft is a bit like that when we do it but on a less grand scale.

Highly likely, sadly.

It was deliberately flown off course under full control. The only other possibility is some kind of pressurisation issue, but that seems far less likely than a deliberate act by one/both of the pilots (pilots have quick donning oxygen masks in the event of a depressurisation).

A good mate of mine flies Boeings for a living and he reckons it must have been deliberate.

Sorry to bore on about it but it’s an interest of mine (even as a humble PPL holder ).

Captain could have simply waited until the FO went to the loo, locked him out of the cockpit (cockpit doors are impregnable following 9-11), manually depressurised the aircraft and donned his own mask to remain conscious.

He dipped the wing to say goodbye to his home town and flew onwards to fuel starvation and oblivion.

Read it. More clued in now.

Though, at 35,000+ feet, I'm inclined to believe that the bends would have done him in before he managed to get very far. Oxygen mask or not, sudden decompression would have made him lethargic and in pain. He may not have been conscious himself for very long.

No, no. You carry on. I don't know enough about the workings of commercial aircraft to make any useful (or intelligent) comments on what could possibly have happened. In cases like that I resort to "It was the island from. Lost" and "I dunno. Magic?".

https://www.washingtonpost.com/gdpr-consent/?destination=%2fnews%2fworldviews%2fwp%2f2018%2f05%2f22%2finvestigators-insist-mh370-crash-was-an-accident-not-a-mass-murder-suicide-by-the-pilot%2f%3f&utm_term=.41a8489839c2

He may not have been conscious himself for very long."

Flight crew oxygen is separate to the passenger oxygen masks. Crew have quick donning masks which deliver oxygen under pressure and (IIRC) last for an hour or more (the reasons why are obvious when you think about it).

Passenger masks are only required to deliver oxygen for 15mins, which is (in theory) enough time to perform an emergency descent.

As for the plane thing? NASA doesn't keep track of planes. It was off course, over the ocean, and had people who were able to take control of it (i.e. Add an element of human error).

Or most likely deliberately crash it, sadly.

I was trying to keep on the lighthearted side of that but... yes. Entirely possible.

Highly likely, sadly.

It was deliberately flown off course under full control. The only other possibility is some kind of pressurisation issue, but that seems far less likely than a deliberate act by one/both of the pilots (pilots have quick donning oxygen masks in the event of a depressurisation).

See? Yet another thing that I learnt. But considering that the crew don't pre-breathe pure oxygen before a flight, then their tissues are saturated with nitrogen and bubbles can still form during sudden decompression.

You may well be right, but as I understand, crew oxygen is sufficient to keep the crew alive and functional enough to fly the aircraft, albeit not a comfortable experience.

On the subject of “the bends” my mate told me a couple of weeks back they almost had to divert due to a medical emergency. It was an evening flight out of Egypt, one of the passengers started feeling unwell and told the cabin crew he’d been diving that morning ...

I’ve seen your posts throughout the years on the forum and I wouldn’t call you thick as shit, lets put it that way. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and subjects they excel in.

I wouldn’t take it to heart. You’re entitled to post whatever you want on here but just need to be wary that you’re going to get all sorts of responses depending on the topic (and sometimes how it’s written).

Well, that's not a situation that I'd want to be in. Symptoms don't manifest immediately from a dive and it can be hours.

Hope he turned out OK, but sounds like the crew had it under control. Luckily, the similarities are something that they are going to be trained for.

He was silly to fly that day. We can’t fly after diving for a period of time and the time is dependent on the depth of the dive.
