"When my boys were growing up, I insisted that we sit together to eat at least twice a week, it was always the perfect chance of a catch up,to hear about their day etc. I agree, families don't seem to do this, anymore. " My grandkids do the same, straight upstairs on the iPad,I make a point of having Sunday dinner with them,no bloody phones on the table, but my daughter is as bad,she took a photo of her dinner and put it on Instagram!!! Wtf

"I have a complicated family situation. I go to my English kinda of “step” family all the time. I even go away with just my step mother and sister every year. We are all quite close and help each other out when we can with any problems that arise for us. The older I get the more I love it. " And we do Sunday dinner most weekends all of us.

Wtf" I don't get why people take photos of their dinner etc. It's like when you are out in a group, and people on their phones ignoring each other until someone holds their phone up and everyone suddenly becomes the life and soul, before going back to ignorance. Then you see the pictures later and it looks like everyone is having a great time!

"Soooo I was talking to a co worker yesterday, and we were chatting about parents and children, when do parents see their kids? Maybe in the morning before and after school, but how many kids go straight upstairs and play games or on social media, probably eat their tea in the bedroom. Do families have Sunday dinner like we used to? Sit round and chat and eat dinner, are we loosing our family values,or am I thinking to much P.S.i love you all x " I know my children really well. I have an open door policy most of the time and we sit and eat dinner at the table. Never eat upstairs and they tell me everything. I'm surprised what they actual tell me at times. I also don't allow locks on their phones and they know I'll check. I love the relationship I have with my kids. They know it's better to tell me stuff no matter what it is. They know I'll find out anyway so I'm always the first person they tell anything to. Anytime they've came to me with a problem I've always put their interests first and helped them x

"Our kids are late twenties now. We always ate together but we allowed them space and privacy too. I see my parents often but not my brothers. I don't know how other families are and I hesitate to criticise modern families in general." It seems totally different now to when we were growing up or even bringing our own up.....some of it is a plus, some is definitely a minus

"It was different when we were growing up as it was pointless going into your bedroom as it just had a bed in it... when getting told to go to your room it wasn't a good thing When our own were growing up we had dinner at the table every night and a big roast on Sunday, but the day of their 13th birthday was a turning point, you saw a lot of their backs going up the stairs to their rooms and they only came out for the main meal but that was only because we insisted. They didn't tell us everything either, I don't think any daughter/son does" Correct

I suppose people have different views on what "family values" are" That's the thing. As Rugby said earlier it's very different now to when we were bringing our kids up and a world away from when I was a kid. I don't think I communicated more with my parents than our kids did with us. I only went to my room in winter to sleep, it was too damn cold. I only know a few families with young children. A couple of them see their children in the morning when they drop them at school or the child minder and for a short time in the evening when they pick them up from the child minder or after school club. A couple of them rarely see the father because he's got two jobs to keep them afloat. A couple of them are what I suppose you'd term traditional families. I reckon if your kids are loved and feel secure that's a pretty good definition of family values.

Mine wouldn’t be allowed to eat their tea in their bedrooms. Always at the table. No phones allowed.

"We all used to meet up at my parents for Sunday dinner almost every week right up until my dad died nearly 3 years ago, since then she's got with a guy neither me or my sisters are keen on so it's all stopped which is a shame as we were always a close family, but it is what it is." Can you just invite your mum round?
