Yesterday I sat down and watched the movie Thunderbirds are Go, on Film4. I’m not ashamed to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, bringing back some happy memories. It even included an appearance of Cliff Richard & The Shadows in puppet form!!

It got me thinking about other ‘pre-animation’ kids shows I used to watch ... Stingray, Fireball XL5 (to name a couple)

What about you? Favourite non animated shows from your childhood?

Somewhere In The Ether…

I was having a bit of a nostalgia trip the other day and went on YouTube specifically in search of one gem from my childhood, namely Chocky (and it’s two subsequent series).

I must say that it has stood up very well (1984 vintage) and remains a very intelligently written and intriguing series (it’s apparently based upon a book from the 1960’s).

Great stuff indeed

All three series of Chocky are on YouTube - well worth a watch

I remember The Tripods to - as I recall it didn’t have an ‘ending’ though? (They may still be wandering the countryside)

Another non-animated show which I loved as a kid (although much like The Tripods, it wasn’t aimed at children) but which simultaneously scarred the bejessus out of me was the TV adaptation of The Day Of The Triffids......

The bastard things used to make this horrible ‘knocking’ sound as they ‘walked’ around

There was supposed to be a final series based on the final book but either the book never got written or they couldn’t secure the rights

Series one of The Tripods, broadcast in 1984, which had 13 half-hour episodes written by the well-known author of many radio plays Alick Rowe, covers the first book, The White Mountains; the 12-episode second series (1985) covers The City of Gold and Lead. Although a television script had been written for the third series, it never went into production.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Does anyone remember the following children’s classic shows:

The Red Hand Gang (an American show from the late seventies as I recall featuring a bunch of Chopper riding kids in bell bottom flares who solved various crimes)

The Legend Of Tim Tyler: This was a German coproduction and featured a kid who sold his laugh to a chap called the Baron (who was insinuated to be the devil).

Heidi: This was another foreign production and was dubbed into English.

And I’ve saved the very best until last:

Monkey!!!!! (A Japanese series based on the Chinese literary classic, Journey To The West)

Yes indeed; John Wyndham was a fantastic scInence fiction writer. He also gave us the classic, The Midwich Cuckoos which was of course later made into the delightfully creepy, scI-if/horror classic, ‘Village Of The Damned’.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’ve just nicked the intro to Monkey:

‘In the worlds before Monkey, primal chaos reigned. Heaven sought order. But the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown. The four worlds formed again and yet again, as endless aeons wheeled and passed. Time and the pure essences of Heaven and the moisture of Earth, the powers of the sun and the moon all worked upon a certain rock, old as creation. And it became magically fertile. The first egg was named "Thought". Tathagata Buddha, the Father Buddha, said, "With our thoughts, we make the world." Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch. From it then came a stone monkey. The nature of Monkey was irrepressible! - Monkkkkeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!’

.....And as a special bonus, the opening theme song:

‘Born from an egg on a mountain top,

The Funkiest Monkey that ever popped,

He knew every magic trick under the sun,

Tease the Gods and everyone can have some fun.

Monkey magic, Monkey magic,

Monkey magic, Monkey magic,

Monkey magic, Monkey magic ooh!

What a cocky, saucey Monkey this one is.

All the Gods were angry and they punished him.

Until he was saved by a kindly priest,

And that was the start of their pilgrimage quest.

Monkey magic, Monkey magic,

Monkey magic, Monkey magic,

Monkey magic, Monkey magic,

Monkey magic, Monkey magic ooh!’

I loved the Muppets......but a few of them scared me (Animal for instance)

Also, a few of the characters in Sesame Street left me feeling a bit uneasy, namely The Count, that green thing that lived in the bin and Cookie Monster (The way he shoved his whole hand greedily in his gob freaked me out for some reason)

Cloudbusting

The latter one which aired in the 1970’s scarred me a good’un

Funnily enough, there’s been at least two subsequent reboots of the series. One I remember from the nineties, featured the actor who used to play Todd in Neighbours and was pretty scary for the time of broadcasting (not least of all as the late, great Sir Christopher Lee was the main villain in one story).

It was more recently revived as an American series but I never viewed it I’m afraid.

She was a bit hot....in a sort of greeny way

The bloody kids in that show used to piss me off however as whenever someone came to the bloody door, we were treated to: ’There’s somebody at the door.....there’s somebody at the door....’ Arrggghhh!!! Sweet Jesus!
