Stop being dry humorous in messages.

I like a bit of dry wit myself.

I can't stand cheeky, schoolboy humour or nudge nudge type humour.

So do I. Just be yourself but choose your audience wisely. You must be familiar with the look that crosses a person's face when they don't understand your brand of humour. I know I am

Sarcasm never works on here...

Someone will always take offence so basically don't bother..unless you don't mind getting blocked

I think sarcasm should be used very sparingly, especially when you don't really know someone. It can seem passive-aggressive, where someone isn't being emotionally clear with others or communicating well. Certainly humour is a great way to connect with others - see the forum, for tons of examples! I just generally perceive some uses of sarcasm as alienating, rather than bringing people closer. It's always about the context and if we have flexibility in our behaviour, then we'll adjust according to the people/place etc.

A bit like that yes .

When we tell people who we are they run in the other direction so we can't see their expression

I get the same. I was in the chatrooms the other day and people kept asking if I was angry

But as others have said if people don't get you then are you really that compatible? Surely it's much more fun to chat with people who can banter back?

I only go to socials where it's difficult for them to escape. And I make sure I arrive when they've already got their beer goggles on.

I'm used to being misunderstood in person. The internet is a nightmare, so I try to be careful and think 'How will this come across?'

Other times I just don't give a fuck..

I like humour that's really near the knuckle or just plain daft, neither translate that well in text. I get bored if I try avoid them though so I'm not that bothered anymore if someone takes it wrong.

Sometimes even with emoticons they still miss the sarcasm...

As for being dry there are other ways to help with that

It depends on who you chat to. If they are just as dry, you don't even need emoticons

It's a form of humour. If you don't get it, you will see it that way, because you don't understand how a dry mind ticks. It's not about being nasty. I would never want to be nasty with someone. Those I have a lot of bantering with, understand that and are of the same humour mindset. I'm only like that with those who understand it

I can see both sides of it. It's great to have a humour that others get and understand about you and sarcasm generally requires this understanding between pals etc. But on the other side there are plenty who do use it as a method to cast negativity towards others, my boss being a big example of it. I'm a witty guy but sarcasm I tend to be a little more cautious with in case it's not received well.

a lot can get lost in translation with messages, best play it safe at the keyboard until you get to know the person/couple, face to face is far better when delivering your witty banter
