If I send a quick email 'hi how are you'.....gets ignored

The eternal fab problem. Messages going unread. I know it's really frustrating but the only way to deal with it is accept it. The FAQs do say that no reply is acceptable.

If they're offline they're probably busy with work, kids, other real life concerns... Would you not prefer them to read your message at some time when they've the time to consider what you've taken the time to say, and respond rather than just make a snap decision because they're busy?

Replying on the forum isn't the same. If a person replies to a message it's usually an expression of interest (unless its a no thanks) but on the forum it's often just neutral chat.

It's not rude not to reply.

Some ladies and couples get hundreds of messages a day so it simply isn't possible for them to reply to everyone. If you don't get a response, you should assume they aren't interested. If you're getting a lot of "no-replies" then you should consider your profile and the messages you send. Are they giving the right message? Are you standing out from the thousands of other guys on here?

Me being online doesn't mean I'm waiting for messages to come in (sometimes I am, but not always).

Delete without reply means no thank you. It's in the site FAQ. If you want to see it as rude that's your prerogative, but honestly, we have good reasons for doing it that way. You may not like a deleted message, but we don't like admin, negotiation, or abuse.

I currently have all my filters off and a lovely status up and I’ve got 475 in two days (I’ve opened about 20). Usually I get about 10 a day at most, when my filters are up. Even if I’m in the hot pics, it maybe triples

The quickest way to make yourself insane is to look at your sent mail to see what’s happened to it.

They will reply to you if they are interested.

If they don’t reply they aren’t interested.

If you are getting zero replies then look at your profile, your pics and what you are writing in your messages. If any of these don’t look/sound appealing, you won’t get a reply.

Another little secret - Moaning about it in a thread and on your status will never ever get you laid....

If no one is replying to your messages, consider how and whether you might appeal to those who you're messaging, some of whom get more mail than they can handle.

I probably only reply to 10% of the messages I get, but most of that is because the others haven't read my profile and are unsuitable. And/or their profile is terrible.

I think I understand the point OP was trying to make. If it says they are online and you message to then find out they are not the likelihood is that by the time they get back on it's buried amongst hundreds of others and may go unread or get bulk deleted in which case you are unsure as to message again with the belief it may have fell through the cracks or assume they're just not into you.

Online doesn't always mean someone is looking for a meeting, they could be using the other areas of the site eg the forums.

Some people are logged in all day but not necessarily viewing the site, they just dont bother or forgot to log out.

Also once you log out your profile does still show as logged in for a few minutes afterwards.

A 20 mile radius isn't much unless you're living in a heavily populated area. I've never found someone who interested me enough to want to meet them within that distance, and there's a large town within 12 miles of me. Proximity does not guarantee meets.

As ever the problem is the massive over preponderance of men.

As a middle aged couple we don't get as many messages as some, but it's probably around ten a day from men. That's 3650 a year. We don't reply to people we aren't interested in and as we only meet about five or so new guys a year and probably only chat to around twenty, your chances of a reply as a single man are around 0.5%

As we say, our demographic won't be the most popular with single men. Youngish single women will be overwhelmed.

Even hiding doesn't work... If you've been added to someone's friend list or hotlist it'll still show if you're online. I tried this but still got 'does this mean you're back??' messages. I've added a bit to my profile to explain, but I don't think too many read profiles, or if they've read it once, will read it again to see if anything has changed.
