It's the sort of program the BBC do so very well,.. as for interfering in the natural course of events.. I'm not sure that's right.

I personally thought they called it correctly. It was a freak storm that caused the issue, and rather than go in and physically get them to safety they just gave them an opportunity to get out by cutting steps. They still had to use their own determination and initiative to get out. But massive respect to that one female who carried her chick out prior to the steps being cut, immense determination!!

Natural selection, survival of the fittest all terms we ll have heard.

If the camera team hadn't have been there . What then?

I saw a documentary about turtles and man made interference (street lighting) caused some turtles to head in the wrong direction, the team studying them decided as it was a man made cause they'd intervene, if it was a natural event predation etc they'd do nothing.. I'd say that was the right course of action, storms happen it's part of nature.

Tell me where the law is written that if it is in the name of 'entertainment' you should watch animals suffer and die? Its never the right thing to do in my opinion, if you can prevent unecessesary suffering you should.

I rarely watch nature programs anymore because they have become obsessed with 'creating tension' over suffering and death IMO.

I wholeheartedly agree as this made a welcome change and the outcome was so good to see the penguins climbing the hurried constructed steps out of that hole were they would have been condemned to a slow death

I was holding my breath when the 3 baby penguins followed the adult out to sea but then the storm came in and 1 baby was on its own for a while, thankfully another adult came into view and the baby followed it back and was safe.

Yup, that's why I don't watch them anymore, it's like all those elimination shows, they just like to build tension on purpose by dramatising the suffering and the danger. Bring back the old days when they just wanted to show mating rituals not animal suffering!

It was absolutely beautifully shot, it’s amazing seeing them so close up. There is an argument about not helping animals in distress natural selection and all that but I’d say that on the numbers we were talking about in the show it would have negligible impact on the species as a whole. Where as the impact it would have on our species is tremendous, I’d rather belong to a species known for its altruism than for any contrive concept of none interference

This- so much this.

I vowed after the let a lost elephant calf die that I wouldnt watch or condone this kind of thing anymore.

The photographers have lost their humanity somewhere along the line, in their efforts not to interfere.

Now that was shown and discussed on vine this morning...and when that was shot there was a massive draught which killed thousands of elephants and giving that calf water would have prolonged it's suffering....but I get your point that it does not make nice viewing

But taking the point about how the penguin numbers wouldn't have been affected as a species if these had died, and extrapolating it back to the elephants- surely they have a responsibility to try and prevent every lost life?

Well exactly = this ridiculous rule of 'non-interference' might apply to a small number of scientific studies, but these guys are making ENTERTAINMENT ffs, it's just television!! Save every bloody life you can you cruel bastards!!! How they can sit there filming an animal starving to death I don't know, they'd be prosecuted for that in this country.
