I've got my mum coming over for a meal next weekend and plan to try to make a cake and pudding to surprise her and preferably not make her ill

I'm happy making meals but have never made cakes or puddings

Any suggestions for a virgin, something that's yummy and doesn't take 43 ingredients

Can’t go wrong with a Victoria sponge, with a jam/cream filling, chocolate melted on top when it comes to moms

Under the Duvet

Have a look on line for the two ingredient Nutella cake. It's easy and delicious, just serve with some decent vanilla ice cream and maybe a few fresh raspberries, job done.

As per the advice of the excellent cancer advert, "bake it or fake it", get her favourite from which every is your supermarket of choice.

Rice pudding. Proper home made rice pudding is delicious.

I did think of buying one and claiming it was my effort but she'll see straight through it.

I'd rather try even if it makes her laugh

Crumble is a delicious but easy pudding to make.

An all in one sponge cake with jam and cream, sprinkle of icing on top is simple but so tasty.

Or, you can cheat bake and buy the mixes that have it all measured out for you, just add eggs/butter/ water as per instructions.

Sometimes U.K

Apple and walnut cake is simple, for dessert I’d go for nothing too sweet like a crumble.

Google ‘simple recipes’ for ideas and good luck x

Syrup or jam sponge pudding is easy. Four ounces of flour sugar & butter plus two eggs put these in a bowl whisk to a dropping consistency and in a microwaveable bowl put golden syrup or strawberry jam put the sponge mix on top put in the microwave for around four to five mins and then serve with a lovely fresh custard from the chiller cabinet from most supermarkets!

I don't know if anyone's said it but I don't think you can beat a good old bread and butter pudding

I'll find it. I know it involves a big bowl and just one spoon.

...Up on the Downs

Do not attempt a victoria sponge if you have never made a cake before lol!

Apple crumble is really easy, and get some Waitrose fresh madagascan vanilla custard to go with it, it's LUSH!

Go for an easy cake for tea like a flapjack or something hard to mess up!

Trifle is easy. Layer of booze-soaked sponge (which you can buy ready made), layer of fruit (fresh or tinned) layer of custard (ready made from a carton) topped with whipped cream. Personally I think jelly ruins it
