"Millionaire mercenaries playing for billionaire foreign owners. " That’s a bit of lazy generalisation innit, Tame? At the very top of the game the yes, that’s might be the case. But that only represents less than 1% of the people who play and enjoy it, and is definitely not the case for the 99%+ of people involved in the sport from grassroots level upwards!

You know, the “footballers are all soft, not real men not like us rugby types!” sort of thing!

I hate to say it but it’s just less yobbish.

"I actually like both sports, been to many ‘live’ games of both (well Rugby Union being a Southerner anyway, not done a live Rugby League game) so can appreciate them both, but football will always be the much more engaging for me. It’s the Rugby (Union) World Cup soon. Let’s see if the country comes to a standstill when that’s on like with the football one (actually, in Wales it probably will, as Rugby is like a religion) but elsewhere it’ll just be ‘meh’. "

It's bad enough having to do a 500 mile round trip on a Saturday when your an away fan but on a Monday or Friday needing to take two days off work is a piss take etc. Against modern football. Just under a year ago, I stood on the side of the pitch at my father's memorial game at his local club and watched my brother play, in his honour. My 5 year old plays it with the other kids that live nearby and in this act, it cuts across race, sex and cultural divides from this level, right up to world cup level. I think that the money involved at the top of the game is obscene, but it's similar to the top of a pyramid, there's an awful lot below that level that is really really good x

The flip side of this is people don't reply, no one gets wound up (again) and the thread dies. Some people do reply but the thread do sent last long. Eventually you find a subject that engages people. You might have to do a few but you get there in the end. You know exactly what I mean don't you? So yeah, as mentioned due to its huge success and popularity football is far from Shite. You don't like football. Totally fine and acceptable. Football and it's fans don't mind this at all, they don't need you to like it. It's growing without you.

"Ruined by money and the wholesale cheating by the players on the pitch. " I think the millions of amateur players and junior footballers around the world who play for the love of the game would disagree. Later on today I'll be coaching juniors and in total there will over 100 kids of all ages from 5yo upwards, no money no cheating just lots of smiles and laughter. Please don't tar the whole game with the same brush

It’s often hard thankless work but the Premier League as I said right at the outset is less than 1% of the game in this country!

Two more words. Jon Hopoate, well it's a name but Google him. Why did rugby feel the need to bring that system in where you can ban players by video, after the final whistle? Glad they did, something had to happen to cut out all the foul play (cheating)

" The ironic part of this situation is the whole country comes to a standstill for a sport we're shit at and have no chance of winning, whereas it's 'meh' when it comes to a sport we're actually half-decent at and stand more than an outside chance of actually winning

" there are saffers, kiwis and aussies playing in the pro 14... and i am guessing they aren't doing it for love... i am guessing they are getting paid very well for it!" No guessing needed, the Pro14 is where the money is at,hence why most top players go to France for a couple of years, coin it in on their astronomical wages, then bugger off back to their home nation when the run-up to the RWC begins

"People who don't like football, for some reason love telling football fans this. Football fans who don't enjoy rugby don't tend to say anything to rugby fans. I'm only on about here and I know many of us like both. Is this because people who only like rugby are jealous of what football has? I can't work it out. Football is not at all in envy of what rugby has and from what I can see it's fans are quite happy for Rugby to achieve every success it aims for." I only watch international rugby games as well. If someone likes to go and watch / support a team (whatever sport) then that's fine by me. It's just not my thing. Have worked next to stadiums when big European football games were being played, never even entered my head to go and watch.

Banter with no hard feelings. A different atmosphere but not quite as good as the one I feel at football. As I wasn't pitch level I could work out what was going on

"Op, insert the word American at the front of the thread then we are all in agreement. Over 4 hours to play 1 hour worth of sport where the ball is thrown, not kicked, and they have to wear padding, bunch of tarts." Yeah take the padding away! Due to the nature of the sport and head clashing it would cause life changing injuries and maybe death...but wouldn't be called tarts anymore. And I urge you to go to a game at Wembley...it's an absolute event, always something happening - the 4hrs fly by!

Both forms of rugby are far tougher and padding is not required. In fairness my kids play a form of American football, but they call it Piggie In The Middle. Chuck a ball over someone's head for someone else to catch then do nothing for 15 minutes

" Why wouldn't you take your grandson to a football match ? Please don't say crowd trouble as you can avoid that and it's totally different to what it was a few decades ago. Yes there's trouble at certain games but they're not interested in you and your grandson. It's a great part of a child's growing up and don't let him join the couch supporter generation

"People that generally played rugby at school were just the fat kids that couldn't play football." We were forced to play rugby, football was banned, detested the game ever since. Boring and the social behaviour of rugby players on tour is WAY worse than football players.

"As a ex rugby player, I still watch would love to play still, I do watch football as well difference Would take my grandson to rugby, but never to a football match. " Can you explain why? I support a lower leagues team and LOADS of kids go and have a great time, there are family stands, kids zones etc. The days of mass riots are long gone and even if there is any disorder (which can also happen anywhere!) you and your grandson won’t be targeted. It’s chav on chav!
