"Do you pay attention when buying your fresh produce? For example i was recently out shopping and asked to get some black grapes. I noticed these came from Brazil (distance approximately 5500 miles) whereas the red grapes came from Spain (distance approximately 1500 miles). It's not that i have anything against Brazilians but i bought the red grapes instead purely for this reason. What about you?" Yeah, but now the black grapes have come over for nothing and it’s a wasted journey.

You've got to be careful when it comes to food miles, just because one food comes from a longer distance doesn't mean the same food closer to home is more environmentally friendly, it might have had to have being grown in heated greenhouses etc.

I saw a documentary recently about how immigrant 'slave' labour was used to grow Spanish tomatoes and the complete disregard the growers had for the environment. You can't cover all the bases but i believe it's a good starting point. It should be up to the retailers to do the checks but to be honest i just don't trust them to be thorough.

To be honest I'm all for it but far too many times in the name of "environmentalism" the baby gets thrown out with the water. Didn't a relatively recent study shows that the average family hatchback was far more environmentally friendly over it's average lifetime, including its manufacture, than a Toyota Prius!

" I heard that too. When you take into account the environmental cost of building a new car and of scrapping the old one then yes, i expect so. But a government drive to encourage us to keep hold of our old vehicles would see the collapse of the car industry.
