Had a few recently. Guys pretending to be in the Army... Just had another one! Unfortunately for him, hes picked the wrong one here! (18 years in military tends to give you some knowledge)

So, why do people do this??

They think it will impress for some reason and make them seem more manly? Lying however is the least impressive trait in my opinion

I have encounted a couple of walts. Asking about their postings usually sorts them out. One was going on about South Armagh but didnt know what XMG BBK or FKL stood for. He must have a new local pub as i have not seen him since.

They think they can blind side folks with their words. Little do the know that the majority of the ladies on here as smart as fuck when it comes to bull shit. More fool the guys as they will be quickly shot down. Cling wrapped and boiled

Been some brilliant Walter Mitty outings on here over the years. The chap who tried to pretend he was a Para to a real Para was hilarious.

To try impress obviously, it is stolen valor and they should be ashamed!

I don't think wr practice stolen valour here, but there are some sites that seek out and expose these walts. Some never served and some exaggerate their service, for different reasons. Entertaining though. .

It's the ones who tip up on remembrance parades in SAS berets and a chest full of medals spanning conflicts over the last 100 years that make me laugh.

They never pretend to be RLC chefs or AGC clerks though do they?

Ah, there's a flaw in your intertogation technique, Captain, you've just divulged your questions!

Hahaha I had this very same convo with an army dental tech friend of mine on Sunday... I seem to recall we said exactly the same! No stacker or dental walts about! And I don't think I've ever come across a crab walt either lol... Wassamatta? Are we embarrassing or summat?

Because the assumption is that women will swoon over a man in uniform.

Personally I couldn't give a shit what a meet does for a living. It has no impact on my life.

Nobody would swoon over a uniform if they caught a whiff of it when you come back off exercise

I guess it's for the same reason they lie about their age, height, endowment etc. They just don't think they're going to get anywhere simply being who they are. It's a bit sad really.

I've met some 'walts' in clubs over the years, and I don't just mean army service liars. There was one guy who periodically changed his first name, location, and job just to try and impress people. In six months, he was a barrister, airline pilot, and personal trainer - wow, such achievements! And he thought none of us could see through his lies! I mean, I hate liars, but I hate 'walts' even more.

They take the limelight off people like me who fought in the great war, killed twice, and am still here to tell the story.

I did a patrol competition a few years ago, it was one of the hardest things I've ever done and I had no idea feet could smell so bad till I took my boots off and peeled the zinc tape off

It's baffling to me. It just stinks of disrespect to those that do and and have served in the armed forces. I think I remember seeing something online about ex forces members in the United States exposing those that actually go as far as to falsely claim they were in the military publicly.

Many service men and women are proud of their service and talking about it can be a show of pride I do feel a time and place to mention it and that's fine but why not show off our pride in what we have done

There and to the left a bit

Disrespectful, dishonourable and a whole lot more - mind you the guy a few weeks back that had a pic of a soldier killed 12 years ago in Afghanistan on his profile plumbed new depths!! He also had one that was actually a friend of Prince Harry.

Mercifully they were both removed eventually but he still has other military pics to sell himself, the authenticity of which I shan't comment on.

To make matters worse this guy had several verifications, so he's obviously been able to dupe some people, which makes it even worse.

Read the Walt thread on Arrse if you want a morale boost - there are some wonderful tales there of lanterns improperly swung.

Deep respect to the poster above who noted that they're largely seasonal and short-lived. Rather like some of my sub's intended meets lol.
