So we've had over 37 years now since the first music video aired on MTV, what's your all time favourites? (Even if you don't like the actual song) There's too many to pick just one but a few of mine are

Rammstein - Links 2 3 4

Stereophonics - Bartender and the Thief

Eric Prydz - Call on me (obviously!)

Chris Isaak - Wicked Game

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Scar Tissue

in some ways I think music videos were the start of the great decline -no wonder no one pays much for music anymore, let alone buys albums -you don't really see fine artists offering edible artworks to get people in the galleries or writers offering audiobooks at a first signing do you?

Pink Floyd's "The wall" is pretty much one long music video too, so many different layers to it that you pick up on repeat viewings.

My favourite is the post concert interview with Roger Waters who when asked what it felt like to play with them again, said: "a bit like sleeping with your ex-wife really" -don't know if that made it onto the official video tho.

Chris Cunningham is a way better director than Tarantino could ever hope to be. If you think thats fucked up, you'll love his other Aphex videos... Come to Daddy, Rubber Johnny and the Flex video art installation.

He also has an amazing imagination and is a brilliant editor/effects guy (along with his team) and pushed much of the technology to the limits.

Check out Portishead- Only you( he digitally painted out bubbles frame by frame for this to remove any trace of water)

Madonna- Frozen (seamless real action/CGI/time remapping)

Squarepusher- Come on my selector (beat editing at its best)

He also directed what i believe is the best music video ever- utter exquisite in every way, the perfect 50/50 balance of music/image. Bjork- All is full of love.

He also designed and built the robots (apparantly he did an appretiship as a puppet mask maker on Spitting Image?).

Also if you have a longish memory- he was the brians behind the Playstion advert with the rather strange looking scotish girl talking about positive mental attitude in the mid 90's...she doesn't really look like that, Mr Cunningham was just ahead of the game as usual.

And finally, if you want to know what he did when he got bored (before he decided to pretty much quit directing to learn how to code)- You'll probbly enjoy Monkey Drummer

Still here? Should i move on to a thesis on the brilliance of Michel Gondry?

Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel was good back then, not seen it for a while so I don’t know if it’s aged well, particularly as it’s over 30 years old now.

Freedom 90 by George Michael was and is fantastic. All those gorgeous supermodels....Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford to name three.
