The WWI footage that Peter Jackson has coloured is on BBC2 tonight 9:00pm. From the snippets I’ve seen it looks to be a fascinating watch. It’s taken from old b&w newsreels of the time.

Hefty Hideaway

I can’t watch. When Saving Private Ryan came out I was studying media and we went to a local premiere screening for the veterans of WWII. It absolutely broke me seeing all those fine, brave gentleman in tears and I realised they would have been my (then) age when they fought. I haven’t been able to watch anything like that since. War is not for kids.

I watched this and it took my breathe away. Should be shown in schools and perhaps we will all learn something. As one old solider said we went over the top and just kept dying" out lives ment nothing to the ones in charge. The fight for freedom is never free. Hope this comes out on dvd as it was moving and shows war as just endless death and it gave us the best look into the past I have seen and brought life to soldiers from 100 years ago. Well worth watching.

Literally just watched it

Absolutely fascinating and actually made me quite emotional listening to them talking about their experience

What they went through mustn't happen again (and due to invention probably won't)

In the middle

It’s quite brilliant, just their voices telling their stories, some made me smile, others touched my heart

I came into this Remembrance Sunday believing that maybe it was time to let go of the past but this programme has turned me completely the other way.

I went to a service on Sunday, there was maybe 1,000 people there and I was impressed how many young 'uns turned out. Maybe that's down to how much conflict there has been over these past couple of decades?

I honestly don't think there was enough made of the 100th anniversary and Monday really should have been a public holiday. We've had them for far less worthy reasons.

Just around the corner

Dan Smow’s Radio 4 programme on the history of remembrance was pretty interesting too.

Wellingborough

When I first heard of this film a few weeks ago I thought that it was going to be a cinema release.

I was so chuffed to hear that that wasn't the case. I will certainly be watching it following the rave reviews it's been getting.
