I see adverts and other media about drug resistant super bugs and it seems I along with many others are to blame.

Errr ..no I'm not ...

I don't self prescribe if the adverts media wish to apportion blame ..it's the Dr s who have.

Do you ask for antibiotics or have a Dr who prescribes antibiotics as a first option?

I have great faith in doctors who are specialists in their own areas, GP’s aren’t specialists. But they do know mostly what they are talking about, they have no real alternatives other than antibiotics, but that’s changing

For me with my tonsils - I get chronic tonsillitis and will always self help first, if it gets to a stage where I seek Drs help then it's a stage that I need antibiotics.

Part of the issue with antibiotics is that we had a culture in the 90s where we expected to go to the Drs and be given something, to be sent away and told to do self help we would feel our Drs haven't treated us. Drs are trained that they give medication to help, patients expect medication to help.

Drs have been re-educated and now patients are being notified through adverts so that they don't give Drs hassle - which of course they do when told to treat with regular paracetamol.

I'm lucky if I go to the doctor once a year for anything. For most things I believe in the body's ability to heal itself and will only get medical help if it's either recurrent/ persistent or life threatening.

You do get these people who go storming into the doctors demanding antibiotics for every little sniffle them or their kids have though, my mum was a practice manager and said it happened a lot. They used to have to get security involved sometimes when someone had been refused antibiotics and started having a meltdown over it in reception

This. I’d have to be on my last legs to go to the docs! Although I insist everyone else goes with the most minor thing!

As soon as something becomes bad for us there is a tendency for "them" whoever "they" are to blame us, Jo Public, via the same media that was used to encourage us in the first place.

I've had doctors who will prescribe antibiotics at the drop of a hat and doctors who will only prescribe them if you are on the point of hospitalisation.

More generally certain medications have been taken off the list of things the docs are allowed to prescribe in this area. My mum paid £27.99 this week for something she was previously able to get free on prescription.
