My daughter is singing in the school choir for a rememberence service at church tonight so I’m going to watch that. £5 each the school are charging, I doubt whether any of that will find its way to the poppy appeal.

I will go to the local parade. I don’t usually go and normally watch the service from the Cenotaph but this year it feels right that I attend in person.

Look through my Great great Aunts autograph book with the rubbings of the cap badges of the soldiers she treated as a nurse and ambulance driver. She was 19 at the time, went and served in France after her fiancé was killed in the trenches. Wore widows dress for the remainder of her life and died at the ripe old age of 104.

Considering I was the honour guard at the local cenotaph as a Sea Cadet, I think I should get my arse to the local cenotaph for the 100 year celebration.

Well I went to the service, my daughter sang with her school choir, the ex wife sang in her choir, loads of school kids had written poems and they put on dance shows to poetry and music, it was good to see the kids taking an interest. While this was going on they had a slide show on a big screen of news cuttings of the time for each of the local men that fell. A 14 year old finished off by playing the last post. Brought a tear to my eye. My own son is a serving soldier so it makes you think of the poor buggers who had no chance back then. God bless them.

I'll be attending the wreath laying ceremony on the South Mall Cork,my Grand uncle was in the 2 Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers..Now what's got on my nerves is that an Independent Councillor & a "group" are holding a protest the same time as the memorial takes place.I'm all for freedom of speech but this isn't the time nor the place.Highly disrespectful.

Without wanted to get into a massive historical and political debate with you, you must understand why this would be a contentious issue here?

And they time of the Rememberence would be exactly the time and place for people with those issues to stage their protest.

And while I would not go protest myself I am sure their motivations are not to disrespect your brave Grand Uncle

I will agree with you that I don't want to get into a historical & political debate regarding this as we'll be here for the next year as I've family members past whom served with the RMF & RIC but also have family members past whom served with the Volunteers. Also I know lads whom are currently serving/served with the British army so I personally think what The People's Convention & O Cadhla are doing on Remembrance Sunday is very disrespectful. The Memorial on Remembrance Sunday is an opportunity for me & other's to show respect to the 3,500 Cork men & Soldiers from all countries whom made the supreme sacrifice in WW1.Not pleased that a protest is being held 30 yards away from the Cenotaph. Will it be a silent protest as the Memorial takes place or will the protest be held without class, respect or manners?

Honestly I hope it is respectful for you and those that attend.

Ireland does hold its own seperate commemoration day in July which has none of the baggage that comes with Sunday.

And to clarify I have no issue with it and have a 2 friends in the Service over there, I was just pointing out that the protesters have picked that date for tangeable reasons

I just want to put this out on the forum as I watched this on G.M.B the other day, can not recall the mans name but he thinks after this 100 year to remember the dead we should stop and no longer have the poppy appeal and stop remembering the dead on such a large scale, I don't agree with this man.

"Cursing General Haig for the slaughter of 63,000 men in one day."

The worst day of the war was 1st July 1916, the start of the Battle of the Somme, with 57,000 casualties including 19,000 killed. Horrific numbers but well short of your figure.

Haig started the poppy fund.

After his death, hundreds of thousands of ex soldiers filed past his coffin to pay their respects.

Then his reputation was trashed by self serving politicians trying to deflect blame or sell books.

Certainly he made mistakes, but WW1 was an entirely new way of war that needed new tactics that he implemented.

He is not blameless, but don't condemn him based on discredited propaganda.

Lest we forget.

Probably a man who has never had to get his hands dirty, has never suffered loss and has absolutely no idea of the suffering those dead men had to endure and the eternal suffering of the families left behind. Those men deserve to be remembered for ever more. If history is allowed to be forgotten then it is very likely to be repeated.
