Having worked in the travel and hospitality industry for yrs i would say its probably cheaper to book your own flights and call the hotel direct for accommodation..you will save a packet

Destination airport website for best way to transfer

A week in the sunshine this way usually works out £250-300 each.

Occasionally you can get a decent deal by using a charter flight, but for Christ sake never stay in any hotel that’s used by a holiday company.

And never stay anywhere more than 3 nights

If you can fly anywhere with Singapore Air or Etihad, do it...its like a different world compared to most of the others

I can recommend going to Cuba- amazing place all round, although the two above don't fly that way unless you're in trouble

I have done the book it all yourself for city breaks but i'm too lazy for long haul and i like having the backup of a travel operator should something go wrong (not that i've ever come home in a plaster cast )

Also, make sure you get shit hot insurance cover. i've just paid a little over a hundred quid for an annual multi trip worldwide policy with extra activities cover, low excess and various extras- its the biggest waste of money until the time something happens and you need it- then its priceless!

It depends where you are going some companies excel in some countries while in a different pace another operator is better.

Never use a package tour unless the flight is cheaper than the flight with a scheduled airline.

Never go in the school holidays or a week either side.

Buy the guidebooks, do the research, decide whether you are going to, 1. Hire a car at the airport for the entire trip, or 2. Do everything with public transport.

Meet locals. Eat local food. Don’t buy anything. Take very few photos.

Be flexible. Be prepared to stay in places not in the order you had in mind.

Use sleeper trains instead of acccomodation.

If you’ve got a car always pick up hitchhikers.

Before you go spread everything you think you might take with you out on the bed. Then bin half of it. Then bin half of what is left.

‘Think not of what you could do with, rather of what you can’t do without’

Save money by staying cheap and eating cheap, but never by limiting your experiences, think of the cost of not having done something.

Booking seperately maybe cheaper but doesn't carry the same safeguards as a package. Fight gets cancelled, hotel still wants paying ect.

I’ve just come back from 4 nights in Havana. Love it there and got to take my housemate for free. Perks of working in the travel industry

It rarely happens from my experience, I see rude people all the time when I’m away with work. Moaning about everything. People sometimes forget where they are.

It has its perks. I love having free flights and cheap accommodation. Just hard to get away as my best friend doesn’t have the same time off as me and now I’m single, perks are not used as much.

Do your own research. Cross check every recommendation and the location too.

Skyscanner is good for flights (as is Jack's Flight Club).

I'm using Air BnB more than hotels. Often cheaper for whole place than a hotel room. Have met some wonderful people and had a huge apartment in Croatia overlooking the sea with it's own pool for £60 a night!

I don't know how much a saving this makes, but it's how I always work. Cut out as many middlemen as possible.

The photos?

I suppose it depends what you want to remember, the experiences or the photos.

I’m sorry to say that in every country I’ve visited at some point a coach party has arrived, selfie sticks have been unfurled and tripods erected. Ruining the moment and the experience for everybody concerned. Sometimes it seems the photo is more important than the view, the building, or the spectacle.

Travel is about you having your experiences not your friends getting your social media expectations.
