"Wearing headphones is illegal when driving. You can wear a bluetooth headset but only for one ear." Not in the UK. Depends if the police believe them to be a distraction. But actually wearing headphones while driving is not illegal.

"Wearing headphones is illegal when driving. You can wear a bluetooth headset but only for one ear." Wrong! It is illegal in Spain and France but not the UK. If the police think you are distracted and driving without due care and attention then they will have a chat with you.

" Should wearing headphones outside after 10pm be illegal? Is it safe to walk around at night unable to hear if someone is following you? " No, absolutely not. And maybe not, no - but wearing them is not permission for assault, if that’s what’s being implied.

"if you are listening to loud sound in head phones is reduces your reaction times at the wheel and even worse on a motorbike. you are not fully aware of your surroundings and other people. you get caught up in the music and you brake later." Best listen to Leonard Cohen then... Seriously though, attitudes and driving styles change for many people when music is loud, not just through headphones.

Even if you accept the premise that it puts you in danger it is not putting anyone else in danger so personal choice should always come first

"You know deaf people can drive right?" Yes but they're not distracted by music, phone call either. It's not just about sound, but diverted/split attention.

It is very unwise from a self defence perspective though. But then again if some one ran up behind you wearing trainers you probably wouldn’t hear them till the last few meters anyway, unless all was silent. And most people wouldn’t know what to do anyway.

Okay, what was the reason you might make wearing headphones illegal after 10pm then, with the following sentence referring to safety and not hearing the person behind you...? I’m sorry, it is what *can* be implied from your post, and it is also why I posed it with an “if”...do you not see that? Thanks for clarifying it wasn’t your meaning. What was?

"There's been a notable increase in the last few years of people crossing the road between parked vehicles with headphones on staring at their phones. I've had to stop sharply several times for people with all the self-preservation talents of a pissed pheasant. WTF is wrong with people when they simply don't care about their own lives enough to check traffic at all..... " We don't get many pissed pheasants round here. We do get people wandering into the road without looking. Or mostly looking directly at the cars and walking into the road anyway!

The OP is 2 things I've noticed recently so wanted a discussion. I don't see either things as being safe. The 'illegal' is just to put the slant on it of many people seemingly having no personal responsibility anymore- for example as in the people that deliberately walk in the front of cars.

I still don’t really like the emphasis of it being about not taking personal responsibility if you fail to be able to hear someone behind you due to wearing headphones (who I am still assuming you must mean that the someone might assault you for this to be a topic of safety, but again I still may be wrong...) I concur it’s sensible to be alert and aware, yes, but should you actually be assaulted the implication that you are at fault because you were wearing headphones, disturbs me - so the term personal responsibility concerns me as it does imply such fault, IMO.

"You should always take responsibility for your personal safety. Although we should all have the right to go about our business unm*lested, we all know there are people out there who don't agree. Therefore it is incumbent on everyone to protect themselves as best as they legally can. If one is listening to shit music at high volume then they can't really be said to be looking after their safety. It's sad that it is necessary to have to do so but everyone is at risk when out in public. I will never wear headphones until the day that anyone with criminal intent is guaranteed to be stopped before they can carry out their planned attack. Roll on the day that crime can be stopped by remote control....."

I was answering with the related context of a linked proposal of making the wearing of headphones illegal, and not liking where the emphasis of fault was being implied.

"There's the difference between headphones that sit on the ear and allow ambient sounds and noise cancelling headphones that eliminate external sounds. Many running races nowadays ban headphones because people can't hear the marshal's instructions. " Have you ever tried bone conducting headphones? They sit in front of your ears so you are aware of your surroundings. They are allowed in most races too
