Should wearing headphones when driving be illegal? Is it possible to drive safely when unable to hear things such as emergency vehicles?

Should wearing headphones outside after 10pm be illegal? Is it safe to walk around at night unable to hear if someone is following you?

It is illegal in Spain and France but not the UK. If the police think you are distracted and driving without due care and attention then they will have a chat with you.

what i find more worrying is the amount of drugs i can smell coming from more vehicles as im riding behind them.

they may think its cool to be stoned when driving but its going to end in someone getting seriously hurt or killed.

Yes. I think car stereo systems should have a capped volume too.

As for pedestrians no I think it is still personal choice, we need to let people take risks if they want to when the risk is on them.

Many running races nowadays ban headphones because people can't hear the marshal's instructions.

There's been a notable increase in the last few years of people crossing the road between parked vehicles with headphones on staring at their phones. I've had to stop sharply several times for people with all the self-preservation talents of a pissed pheasant.

WTF is wrong with people when they simply don't care about their own lives enough to check traffic at all.....

It is very unwise from a self defence perspective though. But then again if some one ran up behind you wearing trainers you probably wouldn’t hear them till the last few meters anyway, unless all was silent.

And most people wouldn’t know what to do anyway.

While it is not illegal to wear headphones in a car .you can still be done for a driving offence ( driving without due care,and attention )whilst wearing them.,its all done at the discretion of the police should you be stopped .so all in all it is not advisible unless you think you are above the law

I use a comms unit on the bike... I can listen to music, get sat nav instructions, take telephone calls and occasionally speak to the wife... all good never been an issue

We do get people wandering into the road without looking. Or mostly looking directly at the cars and walking into the road anyway!

I see. I still don’t really like the emphasis of it being about not taking personal responsibility if you fail to be able to hear someone behind you due to wearing headphones (who I am still assuming you must mean that the someone might assault you for this to be a topic of safety, but again I still may be wrong...) I concur it’s sensible to be alert and aware, yes, but should you actually be assaulted the implication that you are at fault because you were wearing headphones, disturbs me - so the term personal responsibility concerns me as it does imply such fault, IMO.

You should always take responsibility for your personal safety. Although we should all have the right to go about our business unm*lested, we all know there are people out there who don't agree. Therefore it is incumbent on everyone to protect themselves as best as they legally can.

If one is listening to shit music at high volume then they can't really be said to be looking after their safety. It's sad that it is necessary to have to do so but everyone is at risk when out in public. I will never wear headphones until the day that anyone with criminal intent is guaranteed to be stopped before they can carry out their planned attack. Roll on the day that crime can be stopped by remote control.....
