Coming from the midlands (just a few miles from the factory) is it the thin edge of the wedge that Cadbury’s have announced a 30% reduction in the sugar content of their chocolate bar?..... Bloody yanks!

Going the same way as the sugar in drinks. Why does everybody have to suffer for people who can't control themselves.

About time. These companies need to take responsibility. I don’t believe we need all the rubbish they put in our food. People will get used to it I’m sure. I’m happy for it to happen

It’s not a weight issue in my opinion, it’s a health issue. They have been manufacturing these goods filled with rubbish for years. There’s no need for it to be in there.

it's needed to make it taste good! Just to be eaten occasionally though.

Agree, we're organic full fat milk & butter consumers here. Chocolate has changed too much now as has lots of yummy treats.

Chocolate used to taste good back in the day but it didn’t have the sugar content it has now. They just kept on increasing it. Absolutely no need for it to be in there whether you eat it once a year or every minute. So many products with horrendous sugar levels.

Just go to a shop and try to buy a non fizzy drink. You can stand a spoon up in a Drench and lots of others it’s so syrup and sugar filled. Flavoured waters with 27 teaspoons of sugar! Shocking really.

Yeah an I like it like that it tastes good. I just don't see why should I suffer because people can't control themselves or their children.

I will reserve my judgement until I taste said chocolate.

The other day I passed the factory on the train. Literally saw a huge Tate and Lyle tanker lorry pumping it's content into the factory. They must get though some sugar.

You want to take the thread down the route of weight and that is of course your prerogative but I don’t agree with what you’re saying. There is far more to the debate than that. Health issues are not limited to people who are overweight but this is why it can never really be discussed sensibly on here because it all comes back to weight, incorrectly in my opinion.

Anyway, I’ve given my view and read yours and agree to disagree and just leave it there

That's what the whole Jamie oliver campaign was about obesity. People know they aren't good for them but are a treat etc people have been using them to excess so everybody suffers. Not fair.

I live in Bournville and used to work at Cadburys, when you have your medical they tell you that you'll probably gain at least half a stone in weight within the first few weeks due to all the product you're allowed to consume whilst at work......

And smoked using a rolled-up banana leaf apparently

Anyway, Americans are used to revolting chocolate. I was in Vegas recently and bought a bar from the Hershey store. Fuck me, it was like eating a vaguely chocolate-scented block of hard wax. I threw it away after two squares.

The flavour and texture of Cadbury chocolate has been revolting in recent years, both tasteless and oily at the same time - funnily enough since it was taken over So I'm not sure that reducing its sugar content could make it any worse and I won't be rushing to try it!

I do agree that if sugar can be reduced without affecting the flavour of a product then it makes sense to do so and I have no objection to that in principle, but unfortunately the artificial sweeteners which are very often used to replace it aren't without problems for some people - they can really exacerbate painful and embarrassing IBS symptoms for example, and spark headaches. As they're now increasingly found in more and more foodstuffs it can be a minefield trying to avoid them, and of course your choice is then frustratingly much reduced. For those who are adversely affected by sugar substitutes this approach can feel rather unfair - when sugar (in moderation) is literally more palatable.

just dont buy it, buy another make, i did this, i havent bought cadbury is years, probably never will again, one look at the price and went to supermarket own branded, shop about as some bad some good and you will find a nearly identical taste half the price.

but its because of fat people, in news today already now they are thinking of taxing all meat because it will save the nhs money and decrease the death rate.

I too grew up near Bournviile and was weaned on Cadbury’s as most of my extended family worked there.

It’s certainly not as nice as it was but I suspect that my tastes have changed. I much prefer Green and Blacks or Hotel Chocolate now, although I rarely eat the stuff anyway unless someone buys me some.

Its not the yanks making them do it there is a push to reduce sugar intake in all products. The Sugar tax in fizzy drinks was only the start.

Why is it the yanks' fault? Doesn't the sugar tax imposed recently by the BRITISH government have anything to do with it?

Because they took over Cadbury’s and immediately started altering the recipe to make it more appealing to the American market. Instead of not mending something that isn’t broken

I'm all for reducing the sugar content in foodstuffs but i don't like the fact that in many cases it's simply being replaced with artificial sweetener. I don't like them, i don't trust them and this at a time when we should be reducing our chemical intake.

I don't eat sugar fat

I like very dark coca bars

The sugar in sugar fat bars is actually mostly filler as sucrose can only achieve a certain sweetness , adding more sugar does not sweeter make ! It's mainly an excuse not to add choc to the mix

Sugar unless dosed very carefully , if eaten habitually. 100 grams daily for example

Plays havoc with the liver and insulin sensitivity

Sugar has a time and a place but should be treated like the potentially harmful addictive drug it really is

Make my own these days. Most high street chocolate has born no resemblence to the real thing for a long time. For example they extract the cocao butter from the raw cocao and sell it to the cosmetics industry then replace it with palm oil. Plus add lots of sugar etc. Real 100% chocolate takes about a month to get used to taste wise but once you do then you lose any desire for the other stuff.

Obesity costs the NHS £7 billion and rising.

Now, should the cost of that be picked up by you and I - or should it be borne by those who profit from the sale of obesity products?

I'd say the latter.

Whatever these companies say, they are interested only in making money, not in making people healthier.
