A wee bit of a rant here. My daughter is going through a tough time just now with regards her mental health. She is feeling suicidal and has attempted suicide 3 times now in the last few months. During this time I have now came to realise that young people are not getting anywhere near the support that they need or deserve. I'm not sure if this is a problem only assosiated with the Lanakshire area or if this is a nationwide issue. Something needs to be done urgently though.

You’re correct. I was getting nowhere with the NHS with my child’s issues. A little different to yours though. It was hell for 6 years. Fighting and fighting for everything and getting nowhere. 6 months ago I decided to go and see a private consultant in London as I honestly didn’t know where else to turn. Yeah it was expensive, although not as expensive as I thought it would be to be fair, but I honestly wish I’d done it years ago. I can’t even describe how different life is now with the proper help and medication. If you can I would definitely recommend it.

I told two doctors a couple of months ago that my physical health is so bad that despite working so hard on my mental health, it’s went down the shitter (again) and I want to kill myself. One doctor laughed, another rolled her eyes. Thanks lads

Thanks for your input. I think if you have a look around this forum I'm not the only one talking about serious issues that are affecting people everyday. I was wondering if this was a local issue or a more widespread national one. Yes it's a swingers site but I'm assuming there will be people on here that's been affected by the same as what I'm going through just now.

its nationwide. The money that gets allocated is never seen on the front line. CAMHS have no structured process for referrals therefore every single child referred is taken on board. There is no differing between behavioral issues and mental health issues, All are treated within the same team yet there are no MH nurses to then work with them. They often have upwards of 120 service users allocated to 1 mh nurse. meaning that the interventions needed dont get done because they dont have the time. Yes its wrong Yes its a disgrace but untill someone is brave enough to say the entire infrastructure of CAMHS needs to be reworked, I cant see it changing any time soon.

CAMHS don't take every kid on board, if they're not worse case scenarios or in need of medication that only they can prescribe they close your case telling you that if your child needs help again in the future then they will need a new referral. You then get put back to local MAT teams who can only do short term interventions of 6-12 weeks if you are lucky due to funding cuts. We've been going backwards and firwards with them for 9 years but now my son is prescribed methylfenyldate they have to keep us on for regular check ups. Our county council cut funding to children services and social care by £3million last year and need to make more cuts this next year. At the moment, only 1 in 4 young people who require mental health services are able to access help from the NHS.

My daughter is being seen by CAHMS but tbh I feel she should be getting seen more than she is. But I guess with all the budget cuts they are probably doing as much as they can.

Its an international problem or at least our little patch of the globe..

Mental.health issues still carry stigma in some peoples minds and policy makers do not invest enough in prevention or treatment.

Keep.taking and use every support and service you can

Mr works in the front line of the NHS . I see it every day at work. to kids to the old people. we sometimes need help. we all feel low sometimes. this is why we need family and friends to help. mental health is so big.

the way I cope with it is keep my mind relax and enjoy every day. help people. make people happy. find new friends. go new places. keep away from nasty people. keep away from drugs and alcohol.

I see this the jobs we go to.

star fresh. is what I do. I love my job my girlfriend and everything. took me over 2 yrs to open my eyes. with out help.

they offer me help I didn't want it. I felt if I ask for help I lose my job and my son.

but likeci said am happy now I do try to talk to people who may feel low sometimes.

It's nationwide

I work in the NHS and see it on almost a daily basis.

It's bad for children.....even worse for adults

Many just fall off the radar at 18.

So advice?

Keep pushing

Get all the help you can....get school on board.....do they have pastoral support adviser/team?

GP not helping? Change GPs....have a look at practice websites....see if there is one who specialises in mental health.

Good luck

It's shite. 3 years come May my 15 yo niece took her own life. She had all the referrals to CAMHS etc. First appointment she was given a diary; told to fill it in daily on her feelings and come back in a month........

Sadly, the cuts in mental health treatment of the 90's led to a lot of facilities closing down, never to be replaced. Care in the Community became the new mantra, except the community didn't care. Even if they did, they were not equipped to provide the right kind of treatment. It seems now that it's been left mostly to charity based organizations, even though mental health awareness is a trendy bandwagon that HMG have happily jumped back onto. It remains to be seen whether that will produce anything useful..

MH has been underfunded for generations. It is a system which needs far more investment.

I have been on every side of the coin here - used services myself, am a carer for a loved one who uses services, commissioned services and now manage a MH charity.....in every role I am impressed with some massively committed people fighting the system to make a difference. I have also come across people so demoralised by the system that they give up.

However I will be very clear - it isn't local authorities or local CCGs making cuts for the sake of it, it is having to balance the books due to obscene cuts made by national government in the name of 'austerity'. When I was commissioned services I lost 80% of my budget, not to mention staff cut by 60% over three years. It's hardly a surprise things aren't working.

A cynic might say that the government want the public sector to fail to justify private companies taking over.....

So sorry to hear your daughter is really struggling. It must be heartbreaking for you as her Dad.

I hope she gets the help she needs really soon, even if it means she has to seek it privately rather than relying on the NHS.

Good luck OP.

I’ve found the only way I can deal with it all is to never look further than the next week or so. I drove myself insane worrying about the future and I mean I got really bad. Nobody knows what the future holds so you just can’t even go there with it all x

Having spoken to many people, it seems that mental health issues in children are more wide spread than people generally acknowledge.

My son was suicidally depressed from bullying. Years of silent suffering. We had no idea that after the school failed to act the first time, it continued and he felt alone and desperate.

To be fair CAMHS have been ok. But he’s going to need years of help into adult life to have any chance of feeling optimistic about his future.

And with regard to Fab members, there’s no reason to not expect us to be a typical societal cross section when it comes to mental health issues experiences.
