The answer to that will largely depend on Your budget...

Mid sized cars 1.0 to 1.4 are very popular and therefore pricey...

Seat Leon. Well built. Same engines as vw,audi, skoda but more add ons as standard.

Becareful with 1.4 guessing you're thinking petrol? Not overly good on juice.

its possibly the un-coolest car ever but the plus side is its super cheap on insurance and no one is likely to steal it...

Chevrolet Matiz.

I loved mine, really nice to drive too xx

Mgzr 1.4... Great little cars...

Although some great things like Clio diesels... Brilliant on fuel.

Polos too... Not sure on your budget though...

The only issue i've had with the leon. .. A,B & C posts are thick and so require extra special care when looking over shoulder/rear view mirror.

Ford take a lot of beating in this department, especially the Focus. I think they're better than the Golf (certainly in design, ride and handling) and a darn sight cheaper.

Cheap to run, insure, I've had 3 never once broken down.

Any German car is a winner. If you want quality go German, if not get a bus pass

Loads good cars in that range. Feista/Focus worth a look, Skodas always good value, Toyota, Honda, Seats. Is resale value a factor?

All good suggestions but what you need is an Audi A2. Inexpensive to run, insure and tax. Great in all weather. I had one for 10 years till I flipped out and bought a Chrysler crossfire.. Pick one up for around 2k these days. Also supprisingly spacious in the front and the back...

Plus you will need a gold tooth, tribal tatts, shaved head and the ability to walk around in a vest in winter...

Not that im one for generalising..

We have a C4 diesel auto...excellent on juice..60 odd to the gallon comfy ride, plenty of extras compared to a Focus, low insurance and the best bit 30 quid a year tax!!!

fuck spending 3 grand on a car - get an old VW Golf for 3 or 4 hundred quid and drive it until it dies (which should be somewhere around 300k)

Japanese or German only for me. Had my fingers burned with French cars and Fords. Not enjoyed having to drive Vauxhalls either.

Toyota or Honda Jazz, in my opinion.

If you want ultra reliability then go with Volkwagon or Audi group or Toyota, honda etc. If you value for money but less reliable go Fiat

If you want a bit of both with cheap servicing then go Ford (I did)

Focus in any form is a great car as is the Fiesta and the Mondeo

Onto my second Mondeo now, its a sporty diesel model and its the best car I've ever owned

At the end of the day you need to think about size, use, mpg, insurance, tax etc. Try www.parkers.co.uk as they have a feature that helps you decide. They also have reviews of most cars ever made down to individual model reviews from owners!

Make sure you get service history and the log book. If you're not technically minded then take someone with you who is or arrange for the AA or RAC to meet you there (it costs) to carry out a check

Buying from a dealer usually gives you some form of waranty but you pay more than buying privately
