Anyone recently bought a record player? I fancy starting a vinyl collection again and looking for recommendations please and thank you xx

Brighton - even Hove!

I’d get one from a proper record player / equipment shop so you can get proper advice. I used to have a cassette player called a Nakamichi Dragon which was good for its day.

Really does depend on the amount of money you want to spend, not forgetting amp and speakers too of course.

My dad had one. It had a full 5 Watts per channel!!! He still thought turning the volume up past 5 was too loud.

If you have a local one I suggest popping into RicherSounds - they are always very helpful, I have found, and not pushy.

You should probably budget around the £400 mark to get you going with a turntable, amplifier and speakers. Possible to do it cheaper if you buy secondhand kit, which is fine if you can check it out before you buy.

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you're feeling flush, see if anyone has a decent and fully functioning Linn deck in your area.

The Technics SL1210 is the workhorse of the club DJ. plentiful, easy and cheap to repair if it breaks but you need to buy carefully as the chav wannabe super DJ's may have beat several shades out of it with their impressive scratching skills (record scratching- not bloock scratching....although they probably don't wash when changing between each )

Alan Sugar lost any respect he may have deserved when he sold the UK computer industry down the pan when he refused Bill Gate's offer of Windows on Amstrad computers for nothing. The guy is a complete twat that has only ever sold tat overpriced.

The offer from Gates though, had he taken it up, would have completely changed the demographic of the computing industry. The UK would have been leading the world.........................a total and complete dick head.

I have two SL1200's (The silver as opposed to the 1210's which are black). Technics ceased production of both in 2012, so you'll only get second hand bow, and with the renaissance of vinyl, they probably don't come cheap. Never known scratching to have too much am impact as the they're proper workhorses

Pioneer also do a clone of the Technics SL-1200 MK2 called the Pioneer PLX-1000 which is quite a bit cheaper than the new remade Technics and gets good reviews vis-a-vis the 1200.

I would recomnend going to a decent hi-fi shop as the features on these DJ focused turntables may not suit the needs of a home setup and it can be better spending your money on turntables with other strengths.

A lot of love for the Technics SL1200 and all variations of, which i agree with, especially if one can DJ.

But for just home listening, without scratching or beatmixing, they are quite an extravagance.

I agree that going to Richer Sounds is a wise move, maybe starting off with a basic Pro-ject turntable, or Rega.

I’ve got some Pioneer DJ decks for playing with, but have a Project Debut Carbon Esprit DC for everyday listening.

What’s your budget OP? Happy to help.

JT, you are quite correct, I’ve seen some albums on line for £30 plus, although I have a few of those, so I guess every cloud and all that.

You can get some bargains though. Friend of a friend runs a second hand vinyl shop at a Antiques Village near Chelmsford. I just picked up 3 Yes albums and a Ted Nugent album for a fiver each. Really depends if you have the time to search through a thousand or so albums.

Remember the Amstrad systems well (or Amshite as we called them!). Crap quality through and through. Alan Sugar used to have them made in a factory in Hackney during the 70s and 80s. Never owned one, and that was by choice!

Are people recommending technics for a record player? If you intend to dj then I would recommend technics as you're looking at £300 each. If just for listening I would get any numark or Gemini cheap ones. Direct drive is usually the way to go

The latest Technics model sells for £1,200. However, there is a really nice and top quality lookalike turntable made by Audio Technica, which retails for around £229 - it's even direct drive, so no mucking about looking for replacement belts.

Ahhh ...my record collection is my pride & joy. Gets played regularly on the same turntable I invested in more than 30years ago & the same model is still available for sale today (albeit at a hugely inflated price now!).

Starter turntable: one of either the Rega or Pro-Ject base models. Get one with a USB thingy if you want to rip music from LP.
