Seeing as we can chat about anything on here I thought I wou”d see if anyone knows about an engine management light being on the car

Is it a fail on mot thesedays

Will it be expensive when they tell me why it’s on

Could be all sorts. Need to plug a diagnostic unit in to see what it is.

Ours last time was just a faulty firing pack for one of the spark plugs. Cheap enough fix once we knew what it was.

Yes, your car will fail its MOT if your Engine Management Light remains on when the engine has been started. Under the new MOT rules, it is now classed as a major fault. ... A problem with any of these could cause your Engine Management Light to illuminate.

Depends on what the fault is as to whether it would fail an MOT.

Plugging a diagnostic machine in to your car will tell you the problem. Hopefully it's nothing major. A local garage would probably do this for minimal cost or even free.

No it won’t necessarily.

MOT’s are a set of clear tests based on safety alone. Seat belts, brakes, lights, tyre tread etc etc

Engine management could be simply your car in “like mode”. They wouldn’t test that on an MOT.

Op buy a car diagnostic scanner online for aronud £20 and see what the problem is for yourself,that way you save some money and you can tell the mechanic what the problem is instead of him telling you,and depending on what is wrong with it you might even be able to fix it yourself

Any local garage can tell you with a 30 second test.not always as simple as fix this but often is, could be anything so until you do thst no idea on costs. But shouldn't charge you to tell you and can easily do it if you pop in.

Yes it will fail the mot with the light on.

Could be anything from a faulty cable to a burnt-out sensor. Burnet out Lambda Sensor or overheating capacitor switch? I once had a sensor which had malfunctioned and when my engine was cold it would start no problem and run fine... but if it was even slightly warm (say I'd driven to the shop and parked with the engine off for a minute) the sensor would not allow petrol to flow again until it cooled.

Engine management lights can mean simple or complex. Get it sorted! A wee diagnostic plug-in from a burly mechanic should sort you out in no time.

i have to reset these annoying efi lights on motorbikes when i tune them and remove exhaust systems air filters etc.

service lights too and the latest bikes coming along with the latest security systems need to be connected to your wifi when its at home.

this allows the dealer to be in direct contact with the bike so they know when to trigger the light for a service. even if you havent used it for ages.

you also get sent a reminder email. harley davidson are getting ready to roll this out across its range and others will follow.

Any warning light remaining on will fail an mot inspection

you need to get it plugged into a scanner to find the fault it maybe nothing and maybe able to switch it off ?

Yes your car will fail its mot under the new rules. Im an mot tester. But a grey area is to put a sticker over the buld. We arnt allowed under mot rules to remove it to see if the light is on. Stupid isnt it. Loads of grey areas in the mot rules. I could tell you 100s.

I would recommend someone decent as most places just plug in a code reader and say it wants one of them, without testing the component or sensor properly. If the car is a petrol and is running ok it could be an oxygen sensor as someone has mentioned. Good luck.

This doesnt work on all cars and yes depends on the fault but try disconnecting the car battery and leaving it disconected over night. This can reset minor faults as the car computer does a retest when power is reconnected. But leave it off for atleast 10 hrs

The engine management light came on in my Bugatti Vayron just before it’s mot. I stuck some chewing gum over the bulb and it passed with flying colours

Luckily some nice guy is calling with his diagnostic reader to tell me what the problem is

Hopefully is nothing serious

For the guy who said this is not a damsel

Last time I looked there was no dick there

And also for the guy asking what car I have

It’s a Mercedes a220. If that helps

Hopefully I can find the problem before it goes for its mot and service next week

For safetys sake... Please get it checked!

Mine kept coming on, car went into limp mode... Not cool & bloody scary when doing 70mph on the M25

Had RAC out, got me going again.

Happened 3 times.

Was booked in for full check at the dealer.

2 days before, the cam belt sheared off & went straight the engine.

It could have ended very nastily, if I'd been another ¼ mile down the road & flying along on the motorway
