I'm en route to London for a few days.

Does anyone have any tip? What are the must-sees or hidden gems I should look out for?

Typical northerner thinking the streets are paved with gold. It's just a fairy story!

Oh, and don't drink the water.

Do the river cruise from under the eye, normally the commentators are very funny and it’s a nice way to see some of the sights x

You have to stand under the Piccadilly Circus sign and say it’s like Piccadilly Circus around here . Gotta be done.

Shard is worth seeing. M&M place in Leicester Square good if you have children. Covent Garden always something going on there. Punch and Judy is a good pub there. Cheaper to swipe your debit card on the tubes if you haven’t got an Oyster card.

"Cheaper to swipe your debit card on the tubes if you haven’t got an Oyster card. "

And don't do the "stick my whole wallet face down on the contactless thing" move that loads of people do if you've got more than one contactless card in there.

TfL have millions in overpaid fares per year because people do that, but never check their statements to notice they're being double or triple charged

I should be heading out for drinks on Saturday night so ideas for that would be good too.

We'll be based in East London but happy to travel into the centre. We're both more into pubs and live music than clubs.

Where in east London? Westfield shopping centre is great

My daughter is 3. Shopping with her is horrific "

Princess Diana's park. Get the tube to Queensway and it's just over the road.

There and to the left a bit

Check out London Duck Tours - it's a road and river tour with a difference - you're in an old WW2 amphibious vehicle that starts on the road, then goes along the river for a bit before coming out onto the road again. The commentary is brilliant.

Denis Severs House near Spitalfields is worth a visit an old house that's been restored as it would have been at different times through history - is very atmospheric but is only open at certain times.

As others have said both Borough Market (food) and Spitalfields Market (all sorts of nick nacks) are worth a visit.

Museum Of London (near Barbican) is free and really good.

For adult time of an evening, Covent Garden has something for every taste - can recommend some of the pubs/restaurants on Maiden Lane.

Ah!! Just checked their website and they're not doing the river bit currently due to building works on the ramp they use - they are still doing the road bit though which is still worth it

Do you just want gems that would appeal to all ages or will growed up stuff interest you too?

Actually just thought of another gem that will appeal to both you and your daughter and won't be far if you're staying in East London - the Museum Of Childhood near Bethnal Green tube - has a fantastic collection of toys from Victorian times and older right up to the latest - is also free entry and has a very good (and reasonably priced) cafe.

It's actually part of the V&A these days - definitely worth a visit.

Is that where you are?

Maybe I shouldn't have disclosed such information in public lol, but yeah. x

I can’t think of anywhere in east London can you? Only the castle in Woodford but that’s a miller and carter now I think!"

Used to be a really nice wine bar a few doors down from what I think is Prezzo now, if that's still open. And Chans in walthamstow lol, expect that's long gone

The Horniman Museum is prob too far, shame because it’s a good one.

Natural History Museum and Science Museum are next to each other which is really useful and they are brilliant.

Check out the Children’s Story Centre in Stratford.

And the Tumbling Bay Playground within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Having a ride on the Docklands Light Railway whilst sitting in the front carriage right at the front so it feels like you’re driving.

Usually something on at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, or The Old Blue Last, or Vortex Jazz Club (all in East).

River bus down to Greenwich and walk round the Cutty Sark. Then lunch at the pub there. Then the river bus back and to Madam Tussaud .

Durham Tees

If you are in Greenwich or in Docklands you can walk under the Thames for free. A tunnel goes under the river from the Isle of Dogs to Greenwich.

A walk in the City can give you something new to see or do every 2-5 minutes. From the Millennium Bridge it is 2 minutes to St. Paul's Cathedral, 5 mins to the Museum of London and just before you get there, on the left is Postman's Park with its moving and unusual memorial. 5 minutes walk gets you to Guildhall, where there is a Roman amphitheatre, 2 mins walk to St Mary le Bow Church, as in the Bow bells of true cockney birth, 5 mins walk then gets you to the Bank of England, where you can visit the museum and hold a solid gold bar. A quick stroll gets you to the Monument to the Great Fire of London and 5-10 mins more will get you to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

Whatever you do, have a great time.

A world all of his own

If you find yourself near or on fleet street/old bank of England (nice pub to have lunch or dinner in too btw ) see if you can find the temple church. It's sign posted from the main road but it's not overly obvious. Typical juxtaposition London landmark, swamped by bigger buildings/offices but a beautiful bit of architecture and history.

Think you may have to pay to go inside but it was early evening when I stumbled across it and there was a service going on so I didn't go inside.

I went to one of his first exhibitions, which if I recall correctly, was at the Truman Brewery in east London. It was fascinating.
