I was at primary school, my teacher was Welsh, the headmaster who was also Welsh came in to the class during lessons to tell him what had happened. I can still remember how shocked they both were

Absolutely tragic. Can't even begin to comprehend that disaster and the impact on that town, and larger a field, Wales and the UK all over.

Driving around that region nowadays still brings a chill looking up and the landscapes.

It’s the courage of those who know at the last moment they have to do something…..

Some staff died trying to protect the children. Nansi Williams, the school meals clerk, used her body to shield five children, who all survived; Williams did not, and was found by rescuers still holding a pound note she had been collecting as lunch money. Dai Beynon, the deputy headmaster, tried to use a blackboard to shield himself and five children from the slurry pouring through the school. He and all 34 pupils in his class were killed.
