It depends on how you want to look at it. There are players who can play a million notes a second and noodle away like their life depends on it but they never say anything. It can feel a bit flat and soulless.

I was listening to some stuff by The Band the other day and it just reminded me how great a guitar player Robbie Robertson was (and still is). Economical but powerful when he needs to be. He has a sound that can only be him and there's a soulfulness to his playing. That's my kind of guitar player. Other notable mentions for Mike Campbell, Mick Ronson and Peter Green.

There's no such thing as best. It's very subjective.

My personal favourite player is Frank Zappa. The only guy to match Hendrix for inventiveness.

My submissions for 'best' would be Carlos Santana, Guthrie Goven, Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa, John Martyn.

My gender equality submission is Chantel McGregor. Amazing.

Most on here will, most probably, never have heard of either, but I would say it is either "Steve Newman" or "Chris Tokalon" (either separately or together) -both do sort of African inspired Folk Rock/ Jazz fusion -there are a few Youtube videos out there -unfortunately the videos miserably fail to capture their brilliance in a live performance

It’s so subjective who is the best.

As a guitarist lead and rhythm myself when I speak with other guitarist and they say influences a lot say jimmy page or Dave Gilmore I always get strange looks when I say yeah I like some of their stuff but they are not influential or my favourites.

Dependant on mood it changes as a musician who started playing in band 93-94 my influences are people I emulated then, my favourites would be people I enjoyed and learned from, like Bernard buttler, skunk anansie, Radiohead, manics, pumpkins, etc

Past guitarists I do also love like joe perry, Keith Scott and more although I didn’t emulate them when learned to be a lead guitarist

So it’s hard say favourites as so many influences me as a player but some I love just putting on vinyl or cd and listening to

Its Phenomenal .. you can see everyone else look amazed, then he just tosses the guitar in the air and walks off.

Going to go against most peoples taste here but for without a shadow of a doubt it's dimebag darrel god rest his wonderful soul. He was the most complete guitarist to me and very inventive. Brought real metal back from the brink and combined groove and blues guitaring with it. Basically the john lennon of the metal world. A truly one of a kind guitarist

Jeff Beck is certainly, in terms of wide ranging ability, different styles, technical ability and knowledge, one of the very top. He’s the guy that the likes of Clapton go to for advice.

Guitar: Steve Hackett from Genesis

Bass and Chapman stick: Tony Levin from Peter Gabriel's band, as well as King Crimsom and a few other artists.

Mr Levin is just as busy as Nile Rogers, but doesn't get near as much publicity.

Obviously UV got Peter Greene , Clapton .Hendrix .

But there are loads understated .

John squire is amazing in his own genre .buddy guy is blues personified , and recently I saw Jake Bugg live ...and fuck me that lad can play the guitar ..blew me away.
