Greece bans obese tourists from riding on donkeys

Greece has banned fat tourists from riding on donkeys after campaigners said the animals were being left with spinal injuries. The move comes after shocking images emerged of donkeys climbing the narrow steps of the Greek island of Santorini holding obese holidaymakers. Lawmakers in Greece have since pledged to do more to help the animals.

It's a good start, but to be honest, they should stop everybody from riding them. Animals shouldn't be used in this way.

Make the obese tourists give the donkeys a ride.

I had a huge argument with an obese tourist and the donkey's owner a few years ago now.

Stood in the middle of the hill and refused to let a 20 stone woman past until she got off.

To be fair she said she hadn't thought it through in the end after much arguing.

I know it would return to normal after I'd left but I felt better for it.

Surely this thread is about not causing suffering to animals by making them carry more than they can bear not about whether it's ethical to ride them. A weight limit applies to horses too, many in schools are the size of donkeys, it's only common sense to make the limit relative to this.

Yes but my point is valid. Why do we need to provide tourists with donkeys to ride? What kind of moron goes on holiday and thinks "what's missing in my life is riding a donkey"? It's outdated at best.

The last time i was on a donkey i was around 8 years old. All that matters to me is that any animal is treated with respect and well cared for, if people want to ride them that's fine with me.

The donkey owners should be licensed, and inspected. If found mistreating their animals then pull the license and seize the donkeys.

I’m overweight and a flight attendant, how would that work? Also, you could have a 6ft8 guy who is not overweight but heavier than a 5ft6 guy who is overweight. How do you manage that?

Well this becomes a problem when no one wants the donkeys when they’re seized . Not far from us there are two donkey sanctuaries which house dozens of donkeys that are now no use at Weston beach .

It’s bloody expensive and both places rely on charity to help them out . A terrible situation .

Well folks, I have the inside track here....

The donkeys in question are in Santorini and tourists, of any size have the opportunity to go from the port to the town BY EITHER, wait for it, donkey OR monorail lift. (installed by the animal loving Swiss)

When the lift was first installed the donkey owners picketed the lift to try and stop people, of all sizes, using it. It failed as a cartel however, and now we have people of all sizes using both forms of levitation.

As an added feature, donkeys have been known to walk too close to the wall so that the passengers left leg gets grazed. There is justice after all.

That is just silly, the admin in selling aircraft seats by the Kilo would double the price for all. And the baggage limits are to cater for a total loading rating in the on board baggage lockers.

But this thread is about miss treated donkeys, specifically in Greece where apparently owners are too stupid to operate a voluntary welfare weight limit.

True, though the word fat is a lane.

I guess objectively, if you're too heavy to sit on a donkey without hurting it, that's a fact. No need to include derogatory terms like fat?

I'm too heavy to ride a kids tricycle. Fact?

To those of you who haven't walked the slope in Santorini here's a things worth thinking about....

The slope is so steep that it has to zig zag down the face.

Not only is it steep. It's slippery (something to do with donkey do)..

The path is crowded with people going both ways. Heards of donkeys don't improve the situation.

The temperature in summer can go well over 40.

There is a perfectly good cable car running right next it with a view that puts the views of table mountain and davos to shame.

In my opinion ANYONE who gets on those donkeys is guilty of animal cruelty.

Good for them. It's not fair on the donkey and those people should know better if they are overweight to the point that it's going to cause injury to the donkey, or any animal for that matter.

Donkey owners should have a test chair. If you can sit in the chair without it breaking you get to ride the donkey. If it breaks then go buy cake.

Apparently.

Often in my experience the consequential issues are rarely ever reviewed and thought about. On the face of it the suggestions often seem right.

Considering Tourism is the main form of income, what will those who rely on this to feed their families do instead? Who will be responsible to feed look after and care for these to be redundant donkeys? Would it be understandably acceptable to leave them roam the streets freely? Donkeys are work animals. Domesticating wild animals is a form of cruelty. Having a large dog in a house may also be considered the same too.

This is why Donkey Sanctuarys exist.

If the owner looks after the donkey and treats it well; or whatever animal is being used as a source of income, then that's perfectly fine. However if they mistreat the animal they should be locked up and not have the right to own animals.

As someone who used to work on a ranch with work horses, if they have a family to feed then it's in their interest to not put that animal in a situation where it's going to come to harm or injury.

Why? More weight more Aviation Fuel more money .Ryan Air currently charges £11 per kilo excess baggage .

Some airlines charge for 2 seats to accommodate those who can’t fit into one.

I'm amazed people back in the states (world's most overweight country) haven't sued airlines for either charging them for two seats or for not having XL seats to accommodate them.

Yeah I agree it’s strange no one has done that. Out of interest I’m going to have a little look into it, see if it’s been tried."

That's what I was going to do!

Enquiring minds

"Ryanair should ban them from the flights.. stop them getting there in the first place

Definitely should have to pay more in any case if you're overweight on flights

I'm only 82kg and often wondered why I've the same baggage allowance as everyone else. I fly slot and in a moments lapse of restraint I did ask the man at check-in once why my baggage was being weight to the exact kg when very clearly the problem wasn't with the baggage. It took him a moment to understand what I was suggesting and then he suddenly chucked and said , "I'll ask for you sir"... Lmao.

"Ban donkey rides.

What's wrong with riding on donkeys? Jesus did it....allegedly.

He walked on water. Gravity doesn't apply

This is true. So we ride horses, use animals for all kinds of transport and movement of goods. Should we stop this also?

"

Unfortunately that's first world response to an often third world problem and only creates more problems. Your example doesn't necessarily reflect the situation where many are hand to mouth living.

Many of those in the OP don't own the donkeys but mostly are employed by the donkey owners. They may be paid not a daily rate but on how many rides they get. As I said earlier it's often more complicated than what one first reads or us led to believe.

It's a bit like the child labour reports we see brandished on our media. Most reports involve some westerner going in for a few days grabs a story and leaves. If however they were to get alongside many if them and their families they would see a very different picture and gave a different level of understanding of the struggles these families face. I've watched a mother's face change when I've listened to her story as to why she gave her young son or daughter to a labour master in order to be able to feed the family. It's just not as simple as we like to think it is sitting in our ivory towers.

Did you find anything?

There was a woman on a plane recently who complained about having a large person sat on either side of her. They each encroached onto her seat space so she was very uncomfortable sandwiched between them.

Just the one person? My word they were overweight.

I think if your over a certain weight you should made to bring your own weight in fuel.

Only a donkey would use Ryanair to fly.

None of my donkeys would fly Ryanair!

Ryanair won't take donkeys. One of mine is a rescue from Tralee and I had to bring her across on the ferry. Probably better that way anyway.
