Picking walnuts

Jump to newest

brighton - chalais france

Yesterday afternoon I was collecting walnuts from a friends tree.. Got a good basket full and got very dirty hands doing so.

So after much washing I still have very black hands.. Ive tried normal soap and water, tried lemon juice and olive oil etc but nothing seems to shift the black stains from my hands..

Anybody got any ideas how to get back to normal white skin, short of taking sandpaper to my hands to erode a layer or two of skin??

Google says try toothpaste if lemon juice and salt doesn't shift it.

Try olive oil. Let it soak in for a bit then scrape it off with a blunt plastic knife or piece of plastic.

I've never picked walnuts before so I'm not understanding where this un-washable dirt/stain comes from; is it off the walnuts? Or, are they growing in a tarpit or in some sort of industrial waste?

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but, the stain actually penetrates several layers of skin and is basically a temporary tattoo. I think the only option is to wear it off.

Hard graft moving rocks should do it.

Walnuts used to be used as a skin stain. A primitive fake tan. Sorry no idea how to remove the stain.

Bristol

Douse hands in petrol, light hands

Give it some time

After screaming, put hands in ice water

Boom, black mess gone... Half the skin too... But black gone

I use the walnut shells to make a traditional wood stain and if your hands are stained theres bugger all you can do to remove it..just a matter of time(normally a week or so)

I used to make the same mistake so always wear disposable gloves as my hands end up green. I've just picked at least 500. They are all drying nicely ready to be stored.

There is no magic way to remove the stains, you will have to wait about a week unfortunately, just keep washing with normal soap!

You may also find the nuts are no good when you open them too. My parents have a huge walnut tree and their crop is buggered this year because of the weather x

You can buy the marshmallow in a jar, it's called Fluff.

It's also quite easy to make.

For the cones, keeping the chocolate at the right temperature & consistency while piping is tricky, takes a bit of practise x

thanks for all the advice.. seems like the wait a week or so for it to wear off is where its going..

Tried a few more things.. Acetone really doesn't help,, finds the cuts too.. Bleach I already found doesn't help neither does swimming pool chlorine, which i guess is the same..

No - no-one warned me.. and I certainly didn't know about it being used as fake tan or temp tattoo..

Worried about wanking as I don't want a black knob, well maybe I do but a bit longer would look better.. lol

I think you are stuck with them for at least a few days as others have already said.

Isn't it a bit late to be pickling walnuts? I thought you did them when the shell was still soft and 'in the green'? Most around here are now hard and dropping out of the husk.

No, here they are still in the green husk.. It was a case of shaking the branches and then picking them off the ground.. It was later that I realised that when you de-husk them that you get the black hands.. I thought that they would just wash off afterwards but hey I know better next time.. Now however they are drying out nicely and taste fantastic.. Despite my slightly less black hands now

I'm picking loads right now, they are mostly out of the husks, on the ground. It's been an incredible year for them, I've picked over 100 Kg from our trees this year, that's well over 10,000 nuts !

Perfect growing conditions this year, topped off by a nice gate to bring them all down at once
