Precious ain't they.

Thought I'd had my last earlier, as I had to make petrified trip to the vets.

I have cry-eye from hell.

24 hours and I'll know whether my baby girl is out of the woods.

I know some who enjoy my misfortune will be gloating...fill yer boots.

I can't afford all the test bills if I'm honest. A blood test is hundred quid alone, that's without anything else.

Princess, I'm with you completely on this one.

So you're in good company here.

Spoiler alert: not a happy ending.

25 years ago, (tomorrow to be precise) I was living in Lyon. And I was going back to the vets, to see how my little puppy was doing. I wish I hadn't...

It started off a month ago where me and my english friends had made friends with a girl from London.

She had what looked like a rag doll of a small Andrex style puppy x. Lifeless, quiet and being treated for distemper. She said she had to go home to Richmond and asked if I would look after this collection of fur and bones, with barely a heartbeat. So I said yes. I really meant to say no.

(I'm not sure if this was the best thing I've ever done or the worst...it'll make sense later.)

This was on the promise that I would continue administering the medication. This was done by putting a tablet in my mouth, pour in some water as well, the pull the pup's jaws open and dribble the contents into her mouth. This seemed to work, as a few days later she was starting to wake up from her sloth like nature and start to have a lust for life again.

The magic happened, she was only 6 months old or so, but she would follow me around the busy streets of the Red Square carpark without a lead. Now considering this dog was originally Italian, I had to speak in Italian to her. Bueno Chica, vien aqui and all that. Loyal wasn't the word.

So a week later I was in town having a sandwich, when an Alsatian tried to steel her food, luckily I knew both the dog and the owner, so everything was just fine...well she didn't: this bitch was going to let anyone steal her food, I have never seen a big dog look so scared of something so small and scathing. It was hilarious.

The joke went along like this "My dog can kill your dog." "Yeah, mine can too and get stuck in your dog's throat". That was a good day, unless you were a German Shepherd, who would never live it down.

So I suppose by this point, I had fully bonded with her. I've had dogs before, so I knew what to expect. I just never knew it was going to be so fast.

It was the end of September and a promise is a promise, I took this now healthy, feisty companion to the vets, as it was now my turn to head back to Blighty in a few weeks. I handed her over to the vets and said my good byes. This was it. Goodbye. I felt good as she was promised good care as she was better than expected.

So on my birthday, I went back to the vets and asked on how she was doing. Wish I hadn't, She'd relapsed and died that week and my world came crashing down...

Lest to say, my mate saw what was happening as he was outside having a fag and said, I think you need a beer; this was 10:30 in the morning and yes was the only answer. Straight to Prisunic/The Grand Bazar for a litre bottle of Beer 33.

That was the worst day ever.

30 minutes later we toasted a lost soul and made plans to return home later that month.

I stayed in Richmond upon Thames, with the her first owner and told her what happened. That was also the same day she was getting frantic as she couldn't find that red leather collar of hers, on the day she died.

She was pleased that I did the right thing and sad too.

To be honest, I'm not sure if My dog died of a broken heart more than the distemper itself. I needed counselling for this, a few years later. All I know is this, that dog felt alive for a few extra weeks. I'm greedy I wanted years.

So it'll be a quiet toast, to someone special tomorrow.

I haven't had another dog since. I want one/don't want one/don't want one. I don't know.

So savour every minute you have together.

Really hope you get a clear diagnosis tomorrow and that she will recover. I’ve known a couple of dogs who had something similar for different reasons and they both lived for years beyond the initial attack. Wishing the best for both of you.

She slept ok, I brought the air bed down and she slept in between my legs with her head on my knee. Her head is more tilted today, she can't lay on her side as she panics she's falling, even though she's on the ground.

She's eaten some grass to make herself sick.

I've put the stair gate up in case she attempts to go upstairs like she did yesterday and I had to carry her down.

I've fucked work off tomorrow to give her a few extra hours recovery (if she's gonna)

That place has already stolen precious moments I could have had with my kid during special times, I ain't letting it rush me making my decision.

Poor old girl. Can you get a little bit of water into her with one of those little medical syringes they use for kids meds (like the ones you find in boxes of Calpol).

Could try dribbling a little bit of water into her mouth with one of those?

If you don't mind but I'd like to give some advice. This works with ill dog's and failing newborn puppies. Works very well. It's a rehydration fuild for dog's who refuse to eat or drink. You squirt it into their mouths using a syringe. A kiddies syringe found in a box of Calpol is perfect. Keep feeding as much as your dog will take. Then if your dog is no better within 24hrs, go back to the vet. You need:

*1 pint of cooled boiled water

* 2 and half teaspoons of glucose powder. Has to be the powder! The boots branded one in a box is perfect!

* a quarter teaspoon of salt

* pinch of bicarbonate of soda

Mix thoroughly and refrigerate. Throw out any leftovers after 24hrs. Make a new batch if required.

You're welcome . If your dog doesn't want to eat or drink, then honestly this rehydration fluid is good enough to be the only thing your dog consumes until you see the vet again. Fingers crossed your dog will be 100% in no time!

I think my girlie is gonna be ok!

She's eating, yes she's being fussy but there's food going in. She's still not totally steady on her feet and is stumbling but not as often.

I went to work last night without worrying I was gonna come home to find her gone.

I didn't take her back as I was too scared. I also can't afford tests etc. I'm certain it's what the vet suspected and hoped it was which is vestibular syndrome.

This is exactly what my beagle had, it looked as if he'd had a stroke

Couldn't stand, let alone walk, raise his head, tilted to one side, listless and even drooling

It took a little while, but he overcame the infection, carried his head to one side for a few months even, and was back to running with me after three months

It's a slow road, but they do get better

Sooooo,

She's pretty much steady on her feet again apart from when she shakes. She's jumping up on the furniture again and seems to be almost back to herself. Yes, she has a slight head tilt buy nothing you'd notice if you'd not seen her before.
