Posted one of these in the Wales forum and it got a good response, and as I go to most of my gigs outside of Wales thought I’d open one up here!

So, who here is a headbanger/mosher/air guitarist?

Maybe we could get some socials and gig meets going

When I get back for the rest of October I've got Kobra & the Lotus in Hamburg, Gus G in Manchester, Rockingham in Nottingham weekend fest, and Serenity in Leiden. I'm not a rock/metal purist but I did listen to a bit. It is a dying scene though. Watching Marilyn Manson and Axl Rose at Download (on Youtube) looking way past their prime was tragic. The last guitar based gig I went to was Placebo 2 years ago. The experience just paled in comparison to a prime Placebo gig . I have complained a lot about how things were better back in the day but if you watch this you will understand. People are more inclined to film the gig than to crowd surf or mosh nowadays. And despite bands like Foo Fighters, Chilli Peppers and even Metallica still releasing current stuff, none of them would rank that highly among the pantheon of great albums.

Axl was disappointing, but there were so many other great bands on at Download that you can hardly say it’s a dying scene. Especially when bands like Shinedown, Alter Bridge and others are selling out tours in hours

It was painful watching Axl at Download. Marilyn Manson just looked off his face. Although it was funny when he brought a fan on stage.

The scene has changed but I’m lucky enough to be near Camden Town so I get to see a lot of great bands that back in the day would have made it big.

It's by far and away my fav piercing but my god wasn't hard work, and to some extent still is.

Took literally years to heal properly, because the tongues 2 muscles and hyperflexible your always moving it so it takes an age to heal. For the first few years it used to randomly swell and migrate too, I've had girlfriends who wasn't as difficult hehe.

Luckily the guy I did an apprenticeship with pierced mine and he knew what he was doing. If you want hit him up I can pass you his details

There is actually a girl on fab who has one too, kinda wanna message her for try :p

Good man.

First saw Godflesh supporting Loop at Leeds uni back in 1990 (I think) and most recently at Bloodstock a couple of years ago. Always an earth-shaking wall of absolute heaviness.

Download every year ‘09 - ‘15. And a boardie and BBBQ veteran.

I stopped going after the exact things I and others warned about happened. I know that the organisation is different now but for something that costs me iro £1000 with travel and all other costs. Plus the number of sub par repeats, it’ll take a lot for me to go back.

Yeah I wouldn't say dying exactly but diminishing might be more accurate. Electronic music is on an upward trend while guitar music is on the opposite trajectory. How big were the crowds this year at Download out of interest? You can't say that the crowds aren't getting noticeably smaller.

Only seen Maiden this year, to much going on unfortunately.

Have Molly Hatchet in Dec, plus thinking of travelling to Milton Keynes to see The Quireboys in Dec also.

Disturbed album out soon so hoping that they’ll be round. Then Metallica have announced dates for next year also.

Easily 100k+ in the main arena between the main and first stage alone each night, crowd for GnR was close to 100k alone. Biggest crowd I’ve been in

I remember 2013 with maiden, slipknot and rammstein was one of the busiest. After that crowds dwindled year by year. 2014 with Linkin Park and Aerosmith was perhaps only 60 to 70% of that crowd. Definitely the friday was sparse when A7X played. The fact that Sonisphere hasn't returned is also symbolic as they admitted to struggling to get big enough names to attract enough crowds to profit. Rock will never die. But might become more niche maybe?

This is what happens when people don't buy CDs anymore. Download bosses were asked why AC/DC are never booked for the festival. Their reply was that the band would eat up their entire budget.

We’ve seen quite a few in the past few years together...Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, W.A.S.P, Shinedown, Megadeth, Rival Sons...and a few more. We’ve got some coming up too! Slayer with Lamb of God, Anthrax and Obituary (which should be good), Metallica on their North America tour, Ozzy and Judas Priest and a couple more which I forget!

Not bad to say when we got together I wouldn’t entertain the idea of rock or metal but he wore me down and now I’m the one buying the tickets!

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

I think I've seen just about every band that I could and would want to - in many cases without original members, but you make do.

There is the odd new band that I like, but most new stuff is lacking melody to my ears, which combined with geographic remoteness and the price of tickets, means that gigs are now very few and far between. I'm tempted by Muse at the Royal Albert Hall, but they haven't released anything good since the last time I saw them, so the set will be shit, it'll just be about the setting.

Just booked the (remaining) Eagles for next June which will be OK, although ridiculously priced. That and Thunder's Xmas show is all that's on the list.

AC/DC insisted on having their own stage when they played in 2010, and take a massive chunk of cash to book on top, so doesn’t make as much sense to book them.

The point about Download is it’s a festival, so you shouldn’t be going just to see 2 or 3 bands. There’s 4 stages, wrestling, circus acts, medieval fighting and generally hanging out for 3 to 5 days with people who love the same stuff you do. Add in the campsite village with its bars, rock disco, cinema, amusement rides and comedy shows going on through the night and it’s a fantastic experience.

I’ve never felt more at home

Love music of nearly any genre (apart from the dire stuff played on most tepid stations 18 times a day) love Classic Rock and NWOCR see a certain social media site for the group.

Sing in a local covers band.

I find it quite difficult to find women who share my love for rock music. I prefer melodic rock like Nightranger, Ratt, Dokken, Mr. Big, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Winger, Harem Scarem, House of Lords, Joe Satriani, Y&T, Tyketto, but occasionally go a big heavier like Metallica and Queensryche, and softer like Boston and Rush.

I used to play drums in a professional rock band and music is very important to me, but if I want to put on some rock, I know I'll get a grimace from most women.

On what was billed as the last big family holiday in 2014, while staying in San Francisco, on my son's 13th Birthday, I drove us down to Santa Cruz to watch Y&T play two sets on the beach. We sat on the sand as the sun set, listening to quality rock with hundreds of fellow fans. It was amazing.

I used to help arrange and promote local punk gigs on and around Brighton in the early to mid 1990’s. We had a few local bands, and a small list of venues who were willing to host us. We would hire or invite the more we’ll known bands (like 999, GBH, UK Subs etc) to headline our gigs, with the smaller local bands on the undercard. I was a regular in the mosh pit, happy happy days...

Lol, no, I was up north as a kid. Came down here on my own in the 1980’s. I do like that song. Chin (Peter Test Tube) used to be a drinking busy of mine until I moved out of Brighton itself.

New Blood stage always throws up some great, unsigned bands. Check out Ramage Inc who played there a couple of years ago - Listen to their song Dont Bring Me Down and try and tell me that riff isnt awesome.

I like Rob zombie never seen him live, slash, trivium, whitesnake, and a blast from the past with reel big fish. Seen slipknot too many times to really have any appetite to see them again.

"New Slipknot track out... That is all

Solid track. Reminiscent of their older stuff. I didn't much care for the gray chapter. "

Napalm Death are surely the best extreme band though

It's a list I might need to think about for sure.

A lifetime ago. Toured so many times.

Thinking about it a fair few of my most-extreme wouldn't be metal bands. Still nice to think about though.

Worthing

Probably go to more gigs now than I did in my teens. Love live music.

Just put Cynic's 'Focus' on. God that was ahead of it's time. Still sounds unlike most other death metal of the time.

I’ve got some good gigs in the calendar but they don’t really fall into the heavy metal/rock category.

Recent rock gigs I enjoyed were

Queen & Adam Lambert (twice)

Eagles

ELO

Daughtry

Plus festival gigs with bands like

Kaiser Chiefs

Manic Street Preachers

Reef

Razorlight

Coral

None of which classify as heavy rock though

My heavy rock & prog rock halcyon days were the late 70s and early 80’s but it was limited to what I could afford as a teenager

UFO, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rush, Genesis, Gillan.

Then debt and duties overtook the exhilaration attending live music. Even playing live disappeared off my radar. However now I can afford it and devote some time playing live again, sadly, many of the bands I would love to have seen are on their last legs if not already dead, but not forgotten. And fellow band members spend most of their time dealing with health issues due to our ageing membership than rehearsing and gigging.

I’ll keep on working through as many of the bands I’d like to see as I can, while I can and endeavour to play more in front of audiences who appreciate that kind of music, before we’re all warming our backsides on benches in hell.
