You obviously don't drive our motorways very often. So frustrating when there's 4 lanes and idiots drive in lane 3 causing the general flow to slow right down and cause hold ups. Where are larger vehicles meant to go? Undertake and risk 3 points?

Exactly. It’s bloody dangerous! There’s One lane for driving on a motorway. Others are for overtaking. It’s hardly rocket science.

Only retards and crap drivers hog the middle lane, difficult to educate pork. I occasionally undertake them and look at them but they look straight ahead and are completely oblivious to what they're doing. Overtaking them and then continuously indicating left sometimes works but very rarely. Thing is lessons and the driving test have nothing to do with motorway driving.

If you're in the left hand lane and come up to a lane hogger and go down the inside then you're not undertaking. You're just keeping up with flow of traffic.

If you come up behind someone, move into the left and go up his inside, then you're undertaking

Ok let be serious,it does annoy me if they are just labouring in the middle lane, not overtaking anybody, however,if there is say 10+ cars in the first lane and I want to overtake them,I'm not going to weave in and out overtaking each car individually,I will stay in the middle and pass the lot

I never do it because I am an excellent driver obviously, but you are in and out of lane 1 and 2 like a fiddlers elbow sometimes overtaking all the slower lorries. Easier and more efficient to stay in the middle sometimes?

Assuming we are dealing with a 3 lane motorway then there's a clue in the naming of the third lane as the "overtaking lane".

So, unless you're driving a vehicle that is prohibited from using the third lane, then what is the problem?

The number of days when you can drive on one of our "modern" motorways and find traffic so light that only the inside lane is in use can be counted on the fingers of one foot. You are therefore likely to be following vehicles in the second lane quite often and even if they are travelling more slowly than the vehicles in the nearside lane you could still simply overtake in the overtaking lane.

So, OP, are you saying you are one of those drivers who think the nearside line is for traffic up to 70mph, the middle lane is for those who like to pretend to be legal while hitting 80 to 90 mph and the third lane for the really hot stuff?

Any driver who can't work out how to place their vehicle so as to use the overtaking lane when needed, but instead resorts to getting angry at other drivers, should hand in their licence.

BTW I'm not some plodder who drives a Morris minor or anything else that can barely keep up with the traffic. My trusty steed could (should I wish to lose my licence) double the motorway speed limit and still have a bit in reserve. She gets driven quickly, safely and plans her overtaking in good time.

I drive on motorways often enough, that's why i know it's not a problem to go round. If anyone's still stuck on this follow these simple steps, they work for me:

1, check mirrors

2, switch on right indicator

3, check mirrors again

4, if it's safe to do so pull into third lane accelorating smoothly.

At no point is it necessary to give the obstructing driver the finger as you pass.

Often very much safer to be in the middle lane when you are passing junctions. Saves having to take evasive action to avoid the blind torpedoes that come in from the left regardless of their effect on traffic already in the nearside lane.

And it's not actually an offence to undertake though it is discouraged. It only becomes punishable if the act is considered dangerous and careless (rule 268 Highway Code).

I've been obligated to give people the finger 3 times in the last 2 days. 50 mile an hour 'smart' motorway (read: slow motorway). Driving at 50 mph on a motorway is excruciating so I whack on cruise control and start doing some forum posts. Then these dick heads are flashing their lights at me to move over. Errr no, I am a law abiding driving, you sir shall not pass.

That is the definition of overtaking. That's what the lanes are there for.

But if you describe your motions as "weiving" when moving from lane to another then you really shouldn't be on the motor way

They are not usually trained on motorway driving at the moment, but I think they were bringing it into the test. Usually they are newish drivers who have no clue of what to do on a motorway and stay in the middle lane as they think it's safer than moving lanes.

If there’s room round go round. If you’re in the middle lane (arguably hogging it yourself - how long do you stay there before it constitutes hogging) and catching a car there then over take. Shit, even under take. I do that plenty (legal in the States) It’s annoying if the inside is free and they’re sitting there but if the outside is empty or there room to pull out, dae it and get on with it.

Worst ones in winter when the fritter is in the middle lane and folk point blank refuse to pass either in or outside. Queues for miles I’ve the fear of a bit salt on your car.

"If there's three lanes how hard is it to go around?

It not hard. But it shouldn't be necessary to go round.

Still, it's hardly worth getting worked up over.

You obviously don't drive our motorways very often. So frustrating when there's 4 lanes and idiots drive in lane 3 causing the general flow to slow right down and cause hold ups. Where are larger vehicles meant to go? Undertake and risk 3 points?

If you're in the left hand lane and come up to a lane hogger and go down the inside then you're not undertaking. You're just keeping up with flow of traffic.

If you come up behind someone, move into the left and go up his inside, then you're undertaking

The middle lane is by far the safest lane to drive in whilst drinking a brew, applying makeup using the sun visor mirror and steering with your left knee.

It is an offence to lane hog

It's also an offence to go over the speed limit. If I'm doing the limit on the middle lane then you can go round me in the naughty lane.

It's not your job to govern the speed of other road users. Get into the left hand lane at your earliest convenience "

I will thanks, I generally move to the left hand lane about 60 seconds before I exit the motorway

Geeeez so many posters that haven’t got a clue about the Highway Code and also that it IS AN OFFENCE to middle lane hog.

Of lane 1 is empty, bloody well get back into ot and carry on your journey.... hog the middle lane and it’s a £100 fine and 3 POINTS on your licence.

Don’t believe me.... look it up, the traffic laws are there for all to see

The most irritating drivers are those that go in the right hand lane on a,motorway and stay there .this is an overtaking lane and not a special lane for road hogs .

Why should you have to go round? If everyone has to go around them then that’s a traffic jam in the making. They should move over the numpties or leave the motorway whilst I’m on it

Lane discipline on the motorways these days is appalling. Too many people in overpowered cars who cannot drive properly speeding and zigzagging about playing dodgems. They are probably worse than the lane hoggers. Lane discipline and abiding by the speed limit helps. 70 mph is supposed to me the limit not the minimum. If you think it's too low, write to the politicians to get it raised.

Are they still middle-lane hoggers if they're doing 70mph? Some time ago I was on the M3 and there was a lot of debris on the inside lane, so I stayed in the middle for about 2 miles doing 70mph. At least twice did I have people zooming up behind me and flashing furiously before swinging out into the outside lane to overtake at over the speed limit, proudly showing me the manicure on their middle fingers. I wish I had Klingon disrupters fitted

It’s not about the speed they travel, it’s about the correct way to drive. If you’re not overtaking then move over. It creates a build up of traffic and I’m pretty sure that it agitates people. There’s no need for it, it is bad driving full stop.

The highway code is a guide and not necessarily a legislative one.

The offence you're referring to us driving without due care and consideration I'm assuming given your description.

It's not that easy to prosecute unless you can evidence people were inconvenienced etc

It's irritating. So is a lot of other crap in life and I bet there's a few of the angry brigade in here, that have switched off temporarily and stayed in a lane too long. It's not really worth being angry about hours later! Only you are carry that, the other guys not even aware as he blisfuly carries on in lane 2.

I agree we shouldn't have hoggers but in our experience, it is the idiots that get irritated by the middle lane hoggers that are the real danger. Absolute dickheads who create more hazards by undertaking or recklessly over taking - they are the true retards.

Also, you don't need to worry. Give it a few years and you won't be able to drive. There will be a truly intelligent (not like the retards in the BMWs), autonomous computer driving your car for you. You won't actually be allowed to drive on motorways soon.

It's just that I was asking someone else's opinion and you just gave me a rant without even attempting to answer the question. That's kind of what triggered people do. "It’s not about the speed they travel, it’s about the correct way to drive. If you’re not overtaking then move over. It creates a build up of traffic and I’m pretty sure that it agitates people. There’s no need for it, it is bad driving full stop.

It is about the speed. If they were doing the speed limit then they wouldn't be overtaking me

It isn’t about speed because even on an empty motorway they sit in the middle lane. The speed in a lot of cases is irrelevant. They just feel comfortable in the middle lane.

Agreed, it isn't about speed, as I said above, it's not your job to govern people's speed.

Besides. Everyone's speedometer is different. 70 on your dashboard might only be 67 on mine "

The same authority that governs middle lane hogging, governs speed. So i have as much right to govern your speed as you do my middle lane driving.

"Only retards and crap drivers hog the middle lane, difficult to educate pork. I occasionally undertake them and look at them but they look straight ahead and are completely oblivious to what they're doing. Overtaking them and then continuously indicating left sometimes works but very rarely. Thing is lessons and the driving test have nothing to do with motorway driving.

Would you please stop using that term to describe people

Why does it bother you? It's French for "delayed". It's actually quite kind as far as insults go since it implies the person actually has some chance of catching up on future as opposed to definitive statements like "they are a cunt" which implies they will always be a cunt.

Course it can bother people and I totally understand why. I don’t like that word either and it’s irrelevant what it’s French for and you know that. What a ridiculous wind up comment.

Ok in answer to your question I find the use of that word in those contexts derogatory personally. That’s all I have to say. I don’t wish to get into a conversation/debate with you about it but you have my answer now.

"Whats a lot more dangerous are the twats who think they need to educate other drivers by cutting them up and weaving in and out of lanes see it all the time these so called experts who think the are the only ones who know how to drive driving to close causes most of the accidents on motorways.

"

Middle lane driving is the safest way since changing lane is the most dangerous part of driving on a motorway, you can't text, drive and change lane at the same time.

Some people just don't know how to drive. Some hogg the middle lane whilst doing 50 mph. For gods sake move over. If leads to frustration for some people which is a dangerous state of mind to be in whilst driving. Personally I just zoom past in the 3rd lane and don't let them wind me up.

Ita lanes 1 2 3 and so on every other lane other than lane 1 is for overtaking only. When not overtaking, move to the left-hand land ( lane one ) . Simple . Its an offence not to pull back into the left hand lane

Issuing a fixed penalty ticket is on condition of acceptance by the driver, who then has 28 days to comply with it, or elect to have the matter dealt with at court.

You're clearly struggling to understand that lane hogging as you call it, "can" result in you being found guilty and prosecuted but doesn't mean you'll get potted every time.

I'm sorry you don't understand the application of law, stick to what you do perhaps?

If they were driving to the maximum speed limit you were in the wrong. I drive in middle lane at speed limit on most motorways as it's more dangerous to keep changing lane every 30 seconds to overtake lorries and other such slower moving vehicles in the inside lane. Anyone driving slower than me in the middle lane, I just overtake when I can and carry on about my business. Not that hard really.

In a town Fab forgot

"If there's three lanes how hard is it to go around?

It not hard. But it shouldn't be necessary to go round.

Still, it's hardly worth getting worked up over.

You obviously don't drive our motorways very often. So frustrating when there's 4 lanes and idiots drive in lane 3 causing the general flow to slow right down and cause hold ups. Where are larger vehicles meant to go? Undertake and risk 3 points?

I drive on motorways often enough, that's why i know it's not a problem to go round. If anyone's still stuck on this follow these simple steps, they work for me:

1, check mirrors

2, switch on right indicator

3, check mirrors again

4, if it's safe to do so pull into third lane accelorating smoothly.

At no point is it necessary to give the obstructing driver the finger as you pass.as i said it depends on what you are driving

And it's not actually an offence to undertake though it is discouraged. It only becomes punishable if the act is considered dangerous and careless (rule 268 Highway Code)."

If you check the highway code I'm pretty sure you'll find the rule number for not driving in the middle lane.

If there was very little traffic, how was this foul criminal "hogging" the middle lane? It's only really a very minor road traffic offence in comparison to speeding - since it began, only 135 people have ever been convicted. Meh.

That doesn’t make it right. It doesn’t matter whether there’s traffic on the road or not .. if you’re not overtaking then you should get yourself in the correct lane.

As a qualified ADI its not me Im worried about it other annoyed idiots going too fast, because they want to get somewhere 2 minutes faster. So if I cant safely drive at the speed limit in the driving lane (due to stopping distances) I'll drive in the lane that it is safe to do so. Also if I'm doing speed limit, you shouldn't be able to overtake me anyway. Driving in 1 lane is never the cause of an accident, speeding is and so it incorrect safe stopping distances. Maybe anger management or speed awareness classes could help.

How hard is it for the lane hoggers to abide by the highway code. Its arseholes like them that make it bloody irritating for the normal folk

"Gets my bloody back up just came back from a trip round old Trafford with guy I'm looking after and had bit of road rage with another driver hogging middle lane, I over took them pulled into middle lane indicated to go inside so they would follow but think they where oblivious lol.

Anyone else think these are irritating? "

I'm not a lover of middle lane hoggers but I find it hilarious that you attempted to get them to follow you like you are jesus in an unmarked car.

WAREHAM

I undertake them then pull out infront of them then indicate back to lane 1 to give them a hint. 9 times out of 10 they dont even realise another car is on the road.

She will have one of those to

Why do I need anger management? I don't get angry about driving. "

Ohh! Must not have the right vehicle for the job then! What are you driving? A ford Ka?

What is it with the hint givers ? There's enough white knights in here.

Drive your own cars and all will be safe.

Maybe some of you are frustrated sheep dogs.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

An instance from about 12 years ago.

A cold but sunny February morning north bound on the M3 north of the M25 interchange. I was driving to London as my Mum had been rushed from Poole to a top London heart hospital, so bearing that in mind and that I was virtually the only vehicle on the road, I wasn`t hanging about. Never seen a motorway so quiet!Imagine my surprise to encounter a small hatchback in the middle lane. No other vehicles about, just me and this hatchback. Not knowing exactly what was going on, I indicated, headlights on main beam and hand on the horn as I moved from lane 1, right across to lane 3, past the hatchback and back into lane 1. Yet even after that, the hatchback was still happily trundling along at whatever speed it was doing!
