As you are all well aware I live in a yurt in the deepest part of the shire, where I whittle spoons and swap them for food and water. I mostly listen to dub reggae and ting all day, to keep the vibes high.

I have no WiFi or 4G, but I promise you, you won’t find a better connection here.

I don’t even have a phone, I simple use carrier pigeon or smoke signals, I’m

totally at one with nature.

Anyone else thought of selling up and living off grid, hankering for the simple life, or are you happy with your 9-5 and a mortgage around your ears ?!

Not meeting

Im up for it!!! Had no phone for almost 6 weeks after mine broke for the second time in 3 months. It was really nice being dissconected from everything, technology has helped a great deal but there are times when it has also made people want things yesterday

Give me something like the beautiful woodman's cottage in the middle of a forest that featured in Grand Designs some years ago (okay, that sounds greedy - I'd happily build it with some help), some chickens, a few goats maybe, some solar panels and seeds, and I'd very happily live off the grid - or at least make a damn good stab at it

If I'm having meat , I like to see as much as the animal as possible. It's the only way to see if it's fresh , also that's not horse instead of cow

If I'm having meat , I like to see as much as the animal as possible. It's the only way to see if it's fresh , also that's not horse instead of cow

I'm happy to have a small piece of meat on my plate. I rarely eat beef, so I think I'm safe

If no ones said it already ‘of grid’ has been used to describe this eco, woodsmoke, stinky pits and cheesey knob way of life.

But it orrigionaly was just so no one can find you. I’ve been off grid since my mid to late 20’s after a period of off grid in my late teens.

But, I’ve never ever ever ever dug in or built a basha, when I could check in.

Or better still...... use someone else’s room service

I like the idea of off grid living, but a tech version. Water, wind, solar power and a deep cycle battery system so it doesn't need to be electricity free life. Add in some permaculture and fish hydroculture and greenhouses around a purpose built hyper insulated wood house, rain collection, grey water/waste water reed and a humanure toilet. Oh and vaccume tube water heating alongside a fire based heating and cooking system. And an Ash coppice by a mixed fruit and nut (maybe micro climate controlled olive Grove) as well as a walled kitchen garden.

Own several houses, no mortgage and work on average 60 days a year, but live on grid with plumbing, heating, and WiFi.

Only problem is my wife loves her work which means we live in different countries.

I live off grid in the middle of a town center. No WiFi I have a TV mainly for guests and it's 20yrs old. read more I have a update TV but no channels in bedroom for dvds. Use my mobile data mostly. Phone signal not great but I like that. Pay as you go. 4bills no debt etc..

Snap! That is my whole plan, I've already done most of the designs and the calcs for water and energy consumption/storage.

Adding in a wooden hot tub with compost powered water heater.

Grow my own food, grow my own waccy and distil my own moonshine. Heaven.

We've been off-grid for 7 years now. Totally solar powered from Feb to Nov, with a generator for backup charge in the winter. Fridge, TV, media centre, laptop & tablets, wi-fi, and our broadband generally tests at 50mb up / 50mb down. You can get a lot of high tech which runs off 5v usb these days!

Water & gas get wheel-barrowed across a field, as does the coal & wood for the stoves.

Wouldn't swap it for the world!

How does the gas stay in the wheel barrow?

You’re right though. If you look at just about any appliance that doesn’t need heat (straighteners for example) the mains voltage is stepped down. So it can be very easy to run laptops, entertainment systems and all lighting from a lower voltage and current.

Some aspects of this appeal but the one thing I wouldn't be able to put up with was living too close to creepy crawlies!

My house in France has little lizards that run up the outside wall when it's sunny and I have trained myself not to freak out at this, especially when one of my cats manages to bring one in as a live present. Living too close to nature would be a challenge though.

I love the look of those wooden hot tubs and am pondering buying one for my holiday home but they do say they take about 5/6 hours for the water to get up to temperature.
