Spelling mistakes are not a problem to me. It only annoys me when I make the mistakes as often it's my phone doing it on its own.

When others make them I'm quite relaxed on it.

I'm mildly dyslexic

I out a lot of effort into ensuring what I write is correct, I do rely on my phone to get things right, but the odd typo does slip through.

I have no problem with bad spelling, grammar etc when it's obvious the writer may have a similar issue, and it is obvious.

Some of the most intelligent people I've ever met are very dyslexic, so it's hardly a sign of someone being a 'bit thick'

It's when reading, what I call lazy spelling, using text speak instead of proper words,that I find off putting.

Lines of writing, with no punctuation, no paragraphs, I actually find impossible to read.

If I receive a message or look at a profile like that, I don't even attempt to decipher it.

The English language is stupid #childishstamp given. I see my struggle with it as a rebellion against ridiculousness. For example, why do we have so many graphemes for the /ur/ phoneme?!? Fur, word, girl, earth

Then those graphemes make other phonemes #mindblown!

I used to specialise in teaching people with dyslexia - to have that diagnosis officially you have to be of average or above intelligence. People's minds can be wired differently - some of the most intelligent inventors and famous people have been dyslexic.

Haha. I agree with most of that but to be fair I’ve realised now that if someone uses a normal phone emoji it comes up as a question mark on here. Hence the hundreds of unnecessary question marks.

It hasnt stopped me running a successful business and driving a Bentley at the age of 34.

I (kat) am really bad with punctuation and grammar but it doesn't make any one stupid or thick as long as people know what the other person is trying to get across xx

Texting pm, or posting something on forum is always stress to me.

I am putting big effort to write down. But i know bad spelling and grammar do happen to me.

I acknowledge that there are people here with dyslexia, but don't understand why people (even dyslexics) are unable to use a spell check.

Other than the people who know me on here you maybe suprised to know that I left school barely able to spell my own name. In them days think I left around 83/84 if memory serves me dyslexia was pretty much unheard of and everyday up untill I left I was told daily hourly by some teachers just how stupid I was so much so I actually believed it myself. At the time I left school I was being fostered by my sister. Her and her husband at the time drove an old fiat 132 the 2 ltr twin cam version so for the day quite modern. Well it blew a head gasket and money was tight so her husband decided to do the job himself but was busy with work. It was decided it would be done the weekend and all parts bought for the job. I'd just left school so was doing nothing so I asked if I could possibly start it. Begrudgingly her hubby agreed and told me what to do/take apart but with the stricked instructions not to use any new parts in case I fucked it. Next day I was up and at it early. My brother in law returned home looked under the bonnet and said oh well don't worry I didn't think you get far. In fact I'd just finished rebuilding it and to his shock it started perfect 1st click. The point of this story is because of everyone's lack of understanding of dyslexia even I believed I was thick after all I was a kid so why wouldn't I. I'm now almost 50. I work fulltime in a job I've had for over 20 years run 2 businesses of my own as well as own some property's I rent out. I know my spelling isn't to bad now but that down to my own bloody mindedness and determination. The moral of the story. Don't ever judge a book by its cover and never let your kids believe they are thick because in cases like mine nothing could be further from the truth. Oh yes I still have no clue where all them silly apostrophe things go nor do I care why becouse you all understand this post don't you even if it's not perfect

Good for you you proved your doubters wrong our youngest has autism he is not academicly clever in fact he really struggles he also has emotional problems however we always encourage him to do his best he is absolutely obsessed with cars he remembers reg numbers you can point out a car and he will be able to tell you the make model how fast it goes and how much it cost xx

Yes mine has autism too. Thank goodness the help and awareness is around these days. I look back at my schooldays and remember people who were bullied for certain things and realise that they probably had ADHD/autism/dyslexia etc. Unfortunately it wasn’t recognised then

Before I was on Fab, I'll admit that I was more of a spelling and grammar nazi. Since then I've become less quick to judge in a lot of ways. And taking time to consider that there are folks that aren't just being lazy when they post a few mistakenly placed letters is one of areas I've learned to become less analy retentive. I still get the gist of what they are trying to get across.

I don't think I've seen a thread or post miss spelt and thought "thick twat".

What does make me laugh out loud are the grammar nazis who start threads about poor spelling and grammar, when their own profile and their whining thread is littered with spelling and grammatical errors.

It delights me to point out the irony. Petty I know. But fuck 'em.

I've also noticed the people who have 101 random provisos on their profile about who they do or don't deign acceptable to meet (ie no poor spellers, no Capricorns,no left handed people, etc etc) are usually the same people who post threads bemoaning how hard it is to get a decent meet....

Sometimes people text so fast whilst spellcheck does its thing and they don't necessarily realise that the word they have put has been changed to something else,so it's not always deliberately bad grammar Although taking time to read back the message isn't a bad idea! I've had messages which I have honestly no idea what they're on about.

It can of course be a positive thing, there is one well known forumite who has made it their calling card! He could quite easily use spell check as some of his spellings are obviously made to look as wrong as possible, but it makes him stand out from the crowd

Totally agree with the auto correct on phones but spell checks are useless to people like me. In fact using them can make things worse believe it or not. Normally they give to many choices and if your brains already jumbling words up in your head your just screwed.....

As for the person your not naming the huge difference between him and me is age. To me it's embarrassing even humiliating to the extreme if somebody's taking the piss I will kick off every time to him it's nothing. Different times and very different understandings of the real issue.

No. It means they didn't learn to spell every word in the English language (and the rules are shit), or they are dyslexic, or too lazy or busy to check every word they type. I'm anal, I have to check.

They might also just not give a shit that some of their spelling is wrong. I'm getting pissed off correcting my phone and am thinking of leaving the incorrect corrections in.

Yes I do, and I know he's dyslexic and I'm not implying he's unintelligent at all.But he's got his USP on here and sometimes it seems that he's working harder to spell things incorrectly than it would be to get them right.(Not at all a criticism before anyone jumps to his defence, as I say it's his style and he's known for it,) but there's a lot of people on here who are quite capable of using auto correct yet don't,which makes their messages and postings fairly unintelligible and doesn't do anybody any favours

I do use a tablet and see this problem but surely If the words are spelt wrong is that not down to the user pressing the wrong letter? I do agree there is little margin/space between each letter and this is the problem, similar when useing you tube and wanting to play different songs to move the song categorys along you have little space to operate I,m for ever going back after hitting the wrong song its similar with many things you want to view/see such tight places to operate with if the design "could" be altered it could make a difference but its all down to space..

It’s about some people on the forums thinking they are better than others and wanting potential partners to jump through hoops to flatter their ego.

I think for some it’s also a handy excuse to get out of meeting others. They’re the ones that are just here for the forums....

I used to be a bit of a grammar nazi on Facebook, but since joining here I’m more accepting of bad spelling and grammar.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with intelligence at all and I don’t judge anyone on how they write, but on the context of what they write. X
