20% goes to printing a t-shirt or a mug. It doesn't say exactly where the other 80% goes, all it says is "When adopting a word from Adopt a Word, you are making a donation to support I CAN’s vital work and your money will be used wherever the need is greatest to support and improve children’s speech, language and communication."

It doesn't give a break down of where ALL the money goes.

From charityfacts.org

How much does it cost to raise £1?

Fundraising costs money, and while as supporters we might want all the money we give to be applied directly to the cause, this is unrealistic. Most UK charities find that it costs between 15 and 25p to raise £1, but such topline figures can be very misleading.

Why are these figures misleading?

Fundraisers typically spend about 80% of their effort working with their existing supporters (donor development) and 20% trying to find new supporters (donor recruitment).

This is an important distinction as it costs most charities money to recruit new supporters...

Bono has a charity with offices in New York...The One Campaign. In 2008 they raised just under $15 million. Of that $184k was given to Aids charites. $8 million was spent on salaries. Now that is a rip off (NY Times)

Mrs Artful is a fund raiser as part of her job. I know the ins and outs of how it all works.

There should be a break down of how the monies are distributed.

An example, how many of you donate your clothes to the charity bags that get posted through your door?

Did you know that the collectors aren't obliged to hand all those bags in?

They can drop off a small percentage to a charity and do what they want with all the other items, usually weighing them in at around 500 quid a tonne.

A lot of charities wont disclose how the money is distributed because they are making a lot of money and donating very little to charities.

A great man of our times once wrote

"I never help or give to the needy" and then followed it up by the profound phrase "Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey".

That man is the great philosopher and anti drus campaigner, Mr Shaun Ryder who is now currently twisting his melon man.
