Why am I considered as weird/abnormal ...

... for wanting to go camping over Christmas or in the cold weather in a tent, whereas those who go skiing/snow-boarding/ice-climbing/mountaineers/etc. are not?!

Hypocrites I'd say!

I don't 'do' the cold very well at all, so yes, you're defo wierd lol

Although having a good Christmas wherever you are and whatever you're doing and whoever you're with is just fine in my book.

Too right I don't give a toss what people think!

And I can't wait to go camping in December, got multi-colour solar fairy lights and bunting for the new tent.

Getting another stove today that uses liquid fuel so that I can cook a nice fancy meal or two.

Went to camp over New Year weekend in 2009/10 in South Devon near Dawlish Warren.

I was going to go to Dorset last year, however, it was snowing around Christmas, as I did not want to get stuck in the traffic, hence I cancelled the trip.

Only camping 6 miles down the road from home this time!

Nothing strange about that, I always have my pop up tent and supplies when I go to Wales or down to west country, if I've got the time don't feel like driving back, I'll pitch the tent up.

I've pitched a tent on a beach in the middle of winter, many times.

Sounds like a fabulous idea to me...

In fact, I've been wondering what to do over xmas - and that sounds like a dream....

Maybe not the season for my favourite naturist camp, but oh, it would be so peaceful and so much relief to get away from all the commercialism and expectation...

Mmmmm - heaven!

Can't do short trips as my typical set up takes 4h to put up.

Not quite a glamper, however, I am becoming one with fairy lights and bunting etc...

Hence I would normally go for 4-nights or more.

That's why I love camping, the solitude etc...

OK, the lappy does come with me on every trip, so I am not completely out of touch so to speak.

Besides, the tent is always tidier than my house.

The new tent is a proper Dutch pyramid canvas tent. It is supposed to have good storm resistance.

It also has a zipped in bath tub groundsheet, and is very cosy, as discovered during my test pitch in late October.

Hopefully, it will last me a good few years!

Pearl - friends of ours are avid climbers/walkers/mountaineers/mountain bikers, and last yr when the kids were with their Father they went up to Eskdale in Cumbria, camped out on the site in Boot in -10 degrees temp then climbed their fave hill in the morning and had hot bacon and brie sandwiches for Xmas dinner whilst sat next to a frozen tarn and looking out over a snow-covered Cumbrian view - sounds great to me!

P.S. they also decided to get married whilst up there!

I enjoy camping and have a nice tent to do it with, but I hate waking up cold. Camping at music festivals in summer is more my thing.

Sorry Pearl, I think you're mad too, but spent many a Christmas and New Year up at Glenmore(Aviemore) in the tin tent, and there were always a few campers on the site.

For a number of years there was always a dad with his young son there, the boy could only have been about five the 1st year they appeared, and it wasn't unusual for the temperature to get down to -20!! However, one year when we got up in the morning, the father and son were wandering around the site, trying to find their tent which had taken off during the night!!!

But have a good one when it comes!

I used to camp when I was younger, I was a good girl guide. However Mr A decided a few years ago we should go down to the bottom of ireland for camping. We went bought a tent and sleeping bags ect.... it pissed down the whole time and was freezing, got half way home and the clutch cable went on the jeep. Had to be towed home from the south which cost a small fortune. Never ever ever ever again will I go camping. Its so not me, I like my comforts to much now and a bed to sleep in.

Pearl if it makes you happy, then go for it.

I'll have an electric fan heater and an under-blanket, plus an indoor gas heater if required. It will be nice and cosy!

I have done it before, over the New Year weekend in 2009/10, and loved it!

Yes it was cold, so cold that my suitcase stove that used butane gas canister ceased to function in the morning, and my Cadac Safari Chef HP stove that runs on 70/30 propane/butane gas canister was barely functional.

I got new stoves now that use liquid fuels and they work at low temperatures, so I am sorted, cooking wise!
