So, does anyone else find poor spelling/punctuation or the use of "text speak" in messages an instant turn off?

As an example I had a message where someone spelt thought as "fort".

Perhaps I'm a snob? It just really annoys me when we all have a full keyboard in front of us, whether on a phone or a computer, and both also have spell check.

So... is it just me?

I often read profiles, threads here and messages and I give the writer a voice... If they are writing like a dumbass their online'voice' is not an attractive one.

I can spot the difference between genuine dyslexia and simple spelling or typing errors and those just using some kind of lazy text, 'down with the youth', gangster style language. The former I will happily overlook, the latter just gives the impression the writer is a cockwomble.

I am dyslexic...but I make the effort to spell correctly and use the correct words as in there and their etc....

Hate text speak as. So being dyslexic, if I can do it there is no excuse for non dyslexics

Sometimes I struggle to understand messages due to poor writing. Disabilities aside, I sometimes wonder about the quality of education people received.

Text speak is sometimes difficult to decipher and understand. Personally i find it a sign of laziness, unfortunately it seems that it's becoming the norm amongst younger generations

Text speak yes. Poor spelling and grammar faux pas ok. I am dyslexic and prone to mistakes. Sometimes auto text makes things worse as I sometimes trust the phones judgment more than my own or simply miss the errors. Maybe my spelling gaffs have put people off me in the past. So be it, but poor spelling/grammar dose not always indicate level of intelligence or lack there of. So for me to call someone on spelling/grammar would be a kin to pot calling the kettle black.

I’m not a fan of text speak at all - Wuu2 - er, deleting your message mostly. I do notice spelling errors but we all make them. I find them more irritating in profiles where you have all the time in the world to check. But now someone will probably find 6 in mine, so go figure

Mr GR is dyslexic and yet you rarely see any spelling errors in his writing, except where his phone automatically corrects text.

Spell checkers and other apps are great for him, especially because he's such a prolific writer.

I hate it, and my generation are mostly responsible for it as we were the first with mobile phones when limited characters on texts meant it was necessary at the time. But that was nearly 20 years ago and you can type as much as you like now so it's about time people started spelling basic words properly again!

That's possibly true. The result was the same. I blocked him. But while it does take longer to write coherent sentences, it takes way less time, and frustration, than the back and forth of trying to work out what on earth people are trying to say!

Don't tell me that you're educated & then prove otherwise.

I replied & told him I couldn't meet someone who boasts about their degrees & then spells it 'laff'. He told me he could send photos of his certificates.

Ugh. Boasting about degrees is so gauche (if there were/ I knew about a strike through function I would have started with "gosh"). (I say I'm educated, but for me it's more, I've discovered my education/ intelligence is both divisive - people love or hate it - and I can't hide it. Plus a bit of a questioning attitude about the world turns me on)

Perhaps I'm a snob? It just really annoys me when we all have a full keyboard in front of us, whether on a phone or a computer, and both also have spell check.

If it's obvious typos or autocorrects, not in the slightest.

If it's just a normal misspelt word nope.

If it's one of the big grammar please no events then yes, up most is currently a good one, but mixing up was and were makes me cry, of instead of have does the same, and many similar.

And yet I constantly use your instead of you're because I'm not thinking and this forum doesn't allow corrections!

The best is somebody who thinks they're superior trying to use a less common word and completely mixing it up for another one with a completely different meaning. That isn't off putting its hilarious.

Hmmm, not the same at all because that would be racist. Most people can distinguish between lazy bastards who use text speak and people who genuinely struggle. It is the former that tend to get on peoples tits.

Nah it started with early mobile phones because your text could only be a certain amount of characters so words were shortened to gibberish

I read an article today (when searching for the history of text speak) which says that in America (because you can chose what to have on one of your number plates) it became fashionable to substitute letters for numbers and shorten them. This has been going on for about 40 years.
