Love petite girls

Once I called a petite girl petite and she was offended so I think I need to learn a bit more about what is petite.. I now know after being on fab that anything over size 12 is BBW but what is petite?

Petite refers to stature not weight. Most people still think petite means skinny when in fact petite has nothing to do with weight. Petite is the term used in the fashion industry to describe a woman who is 5'3 tall or under. Petitewomen come in all shapes and sizes, whether they're a size 4 or 14.

It's how one sees themselves not how one is perceived. I saw a woman who was a size 12 or 10 had huge chest who described herself as a bbw. Not sure why unless she was referring to her chest size and not body size. Lexi

I’d say petit is higher and weight based, I’ve always been stalled small because of my height and I’m 5’4 which google called the average for a woman in uk but I find most are taller than me, go figure

I also used to be a 16/18 and was never referred to and didn’t feel like a bbw, I was always called curvy, I’ve recently lost a lot of weight though and am now a size 8, I still see myself as curvy but people are referring to me as petite now, maybe it’s one of those perspective words and definition has been changed by society

I would say height below 5'5", size 8-10 and fine-boned qualifies as petite. To me size 12-16 is average, and size 18 upwards BBW. Difficult to generalise though due to weight distribution.

It depends if you’re talking about clothes or not. Clothes sizes in the petite range can go up to size 18 because it is based on your height and arm length, leg length etc. If you’re talking about describing a petite person, it would normally be perceived as small, dainty, slight. That’s my interpretation anyway.

I’m sure this thread will resort to body shaming though, it normally does by some the small minded folk on here.

Bit different as that refers to the use of the shoe...You can, however, buy a wide or a narrow fit and still buy an 8 etc in both.

In clothing terms, rather than colloquial meaning, it is all about arm, leg and torso length.

Whatever the actual 'definition' I don't know anybody, including my ex who is a director of a large fashion manufacturer, would class somebody of 5' and size 16 as petite. They would just be people.

It's very much, in my and everybody I knows opinion somebody who looks overall tiny, so 5'2" and size 8, and getting smaller as height diminishes. I don't think anybody over 5'4" could be classed as petite and I don't think over size 8 either.

I always thought it meant someone short and slim. I learned something new.

I'd still call someone short and slim petite. If they were short and not slim I'd just say they're short.
