Firstly, this isn't a question to rate yourself or anyone else on the thread.

Having perused some swipe based dating apps I have noticed that people of the same age can look massively older or younger than their actual age.

Going by unfiltered pictures with minimal make up/effects I have seen (example) women at the age of 40 who could easily pass for 25 while others look in their 50s.

Obviously I have only been looking at female profiles, but I am sure it extrapolated across all profiles.

What does everyone think is the biggest defining factor of how people "age" differently? Is it genetic or lifestyle choices?

It is genetic. Nothing to do with your telemeres, you can look young and your DNA has signs of advanced aging, but things like when your skin will wrinkle and when your hair goes white are down to that.

Also don't forget a lot pf people lie about their age online also.

Drugs and alcohol can dehydrate the body and make it look older while you're heavily using them but this effect should go away if you quit them.

Mainly genes but even the best of genes don't survive a lifetimes ravaging by shit diet , drugs or lack of exercise.

I'm 63 but when some blokes send me messages I think they look older than my grandad. ........

I would say i am aging well for my age, which i put down to good genes rather than anything else, as i dont use any fancy anti wrinkle lotions and potions..

I would say it's generally genetic.

Though smoking and a liking for the sun plus stress can all age a person.

Apparently I look younger than my sister - I am more than 4 years older. So its clearly not as simple as genetics.

It must be genetics, my mother looks s lot younger than her 74 years and lots tell me I look a lot younger than 52, however neither of us smoke or drink so that may be another factor to it

Its partly genes but you still need to look after yourself to enhance what you were given for a longer period of time.

I often look at guys my own age and think 'god really' Ill be single for a long time yet unless some 40 year old swepts me off my feet.

As others have said, your genes play a big part. I also think drinking and smoking (and any other drug use) has a big effect. Plus of course diet and exercise. It's many things.

People are often surprised when I tell them I'm 40, apparently I look younger. I put a lot of that down to never really drinking alcohol and the fact I've never smoked. It would be interesting to live your life over but with all the excesses etc. and do a comparison test.

I think there's a definite genetic element. The Chinese, Orientals in general and black folks all seem to age well.

I'm 40 next birthday, but I often get people saying I look early 20s. I got ID'd for fags within the last year.

I think it's pretty fair to say that if my body were a temple, it would be the Parthenon - I've not taken care of it in the slightest - I'm just lucky.

My Aunt (on the Chinese side) is well into her 70s yet could pass for early 50s easy

I’d say genes play a huge role.

I’m only 25 so I guess the ageing process hasn’t started yet but when I look at my older siblings, my parents & my grandmother they’ve all aged really really well and don’t look their ages at all. So I’m hoping that happens for me to!

I was looking up studies about melanin before and according to a few I read it is scientifically proven that people with more melanin age slower than those without melanin. Something about the more melanin you have means it scatters more light which gives more protection from the suns UV rays.

I doubt it applies to all ethnic minorities though and having good genes will plays a huge part.

It must be genetic with me because people are always shocked when they find out my real age and think I’m a lot younger than I am. I drank a lot, smoked a lot and did a few other things a lot too when I was young. Plus I used to use sunbeds especially in the 80’s when you had to lay under them for hours at a time. Some of my old school friends say about me having a picture in my attic.

I’m frequently told I don’t look 57 and I have a very young outlook on life but I do find guys around the same age come across as MUCH older in their outlook....that’s why I always go for younger guys

I guess it’s both genetics and lifestyle, with mindset and attitude thrown in.

Possibly delusion also I’m actually 62, mentally not so and like to think I’m pretty fit. Just cycled 300 miles in four days. Act and think much younger although also conscious of not wanting to be the oldest swinger in town.

It's funny how everyone responding to this thread claims to be ageing well. I guess that if you think otherwise you're probably not going to draw attention to that fact by admitting it!

Anyway ... I too don't think I'm doing too badly for almost 54. I think it must be down to genes, and/or pure luck because although my dad always looked relatively youthful my mum has always seemed older. I've never smoked and though I'd never claim not to drink at all, it's not a regular thing for me and I've gone several years at different times without any alcohol whatsoever. On the other hand, my diet's not the healthiest, I don't exercise as much as I should and I'm in the sun at every opportunity, the hotter the better. I still expect to wake up one day and find everything's dropped and wrinkled overnight

In my opinion everyone looks their age. I'm 61, I look older than some and younger than others of the same age but this is what I look like at this age.

The last year or so i’ve started having peri menopause symptoms and have noticed my skin becoming more dry etc and my hair has taken on a wild curl that i never had until i hit 40, i now have wrinkles around my eyes. All as nature obviously intends and that’s ok.

I took the decision in March to let my grey hair grow through and i stopped colouring my hair (I am a big fan of the Instagram page Grombre).

Yeah, I agree, I think a lot of people are kidding themselves (or trying to kid us!)

I certainly don't act my age, which is a good start - I truly believe people don't stop playing when they get old, they get old when they stop playing! (and I don't mean play in the fab sense you dirty buggers!) My old man is still flying about the place with a full head of hair and most of his teeth at 91 so I will hopefully have inherited some of his good genes!

What makes me laugh is when people on here try to take 10 years off their age and then you think 'My god, what did they do to you when you were young!!?'
