Could a dealership be trusted to do work properly and competantly?

Had bad experiences with independents.

Years ago, when i left school in the late 70s i knew of someone who'd bodge jobs and he was working for a dealership, but have things changed?

Dealerships now have to adhere to fair practice look on the motorcodes website for garage some independents are good I was in the motor trade for years as a master technician if I can give you any advice just ask .

Main dealers are thieves.. you can only trust if they do the job infront of you and you understand what needs to be done

You will get a bigger roasting from the main dealers.

Might be a fancy waiting area with coffee and well dressed staff etc etc but remember you are paying for all that.

If it’s under warranty then I’d get the dealer to do any servicing and repairs simply because it will stop any arguments if anything warranty related crops up.

If it’s out of warranty I’d not touch a main dealer with a barge pole generally.

As with any trade there are good and bad.. when I had company cars I was restricted to main dealers .. pretty certain they wheeled it into the service bay and as soon as I'd left it was wheeled out without any sort being done..I use an independent now it's my car

a main dealer has bigger overheads like flash dealership and more personal.has targets to meet to make there money from the manufacturer, and they would rather replace parts than fix them, so you will find that small independent garages will give you better service and lower bills. just because you pay a higher hourly rates doesn't mean you are getting a better service

Hiya dave mate, just bought a 10yo polo.

Been sorting out problems but stuck on 2 jobs.

Gearbox oil level check : apparently i need a special vw tool to get the filler plug off so was going to a vw dealer but not sure if they'll actually do it or not and still charge me.

Other thing is the coolant. Looks like its 10yr old. It looks clean in tje expansion bottle, also tested antifreeze level and the corrosion protection using litmus paper and its a ph value 8, so not sure if i should change it.

I am fed up with doing jobs but feel if i do it its done properly and by some lazy arse who'll bodge it up.. The coolant anyway as the gearbox looks tricky to check myself

Yes. But certain dealerships. I have one in city and one about 10miles outside city. The one outside city cheaper and far better service. Never take my car to the one in the city which is about 3miles from me. useless and triple the price for anything.

Agree with this. A good local independent is always best. Ask around. Main dealers are too expensive and the nationals (Kwik fit, Halfords) are not to be trusted beyond replacing tyres.

I have mtability cars so all work has to be done by the dealership. Only one i wouldn't have again would be a Citroen as they took 3 weeks to do a job which should have only took two days, all the others have been great

Highly unlikely they could deny your car being there when they stamp the service book and provide a receipt!

Always use the main dealer and never had any problems, in fact they did my first Mot yesterday free of charge and returned the vehicle all sparkly clean, now that's service!

My brother took his 10 year old Lexus into the dealer where he'd had it serviced from new, with a strange noise, while investigating, the engine seized. The spent two weeks fixing it, he was afraid it would be more than the car was worth.

The dealership manager said "No Change" it's a Lexus, as you've had it serviced correctly, it shouldn't have happened.

Not bad for a ten year old car!

Spent several years in main dealer as a tech I always did a good job was taught to do the job properly treat the car same as if it was ur own. Always worked for me.

I’m always open to private jobs lol ??
