I get slightly irritated when it's used inappropriately. For instance someone will ask a fairly serious question in the forum but add "lol" or my new minor bug bear "he he". I interpret it as a nervous laugh.

The dot in the i

I use it to convey tone, tone can’t be heard via txt and can be taken wrongly, to me it shows a lighter tone and/or mood, I agree it is over used but so are emojis and they can be used in the same way, for example if someone was being sarcastic on a forum, regulars know who’s going to speak like that but newbies don’t have a way to know that, adding a lol in there can show that and help stop threads being sidetracked into an argument with the original point being forgotten about, we’ve all seen that happen a few times, sometimes that can work well, others it can just lead to arguments and upset

Just my opinion lol

On a side note people say things in every day conversation that don’t make it into messaging (not as often as the acronyms you’re discussing).

Words like ‘innit’. It makes me chuckle when i hear it used to the point where it is tagged on to the end of any sentence. ‘Hey Trish, you have to see that new period drama on BBC1, starts on Friday at 9pm innit!’

Notoriously overused in the Southwest where i come from! Not sure about other areas of the country.

My ex used to deploy the word innit and it became a running joke for years. She wouldnt change her mind even when i showed that it was perfectly legit and has it’s own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary, which made me laugh (not out loud) when i first discovered that!!

It doesn't bother me at all when i see lol written. In fact i often do lol as im a very happy person and frequently smile, giggle, laugh. To me it's no different to seeing put in messeges.

One thing i do dislike is people putting innit in messeges or fake regional words.

Thankfully though we are all different and write and like different things.

Me too. I have no idea why though.

I keep thinking of a room at GCHQ with a COBRA meeting convened. Everyone shhhhhh. This is a serious matter. There is far too much LOLing and it has to be stamped out. We will start monitoring all internet traffic and apply filters to turn LOLing off. No one will have a clue any more and in future will have to decide if to smile or not. I think it should be replaced with 'Ha' for a sarcastic or ironic laugh or 'hee hee' to mean a roll around the floor, side splitting belly laugh.

Lol,pmsl and lmfao should be banned completely and never even spoken of again. Ha!lol nice hat"

Yeah,,,you said before. Ha.

"I use it to convey tone, tone can’t be heard via txt and can be taken wrongly, to me it shows a lighter tone and/or mood, I agree it is over used but so are emojis and they can be used in the same way, for example if someone was being sarcastic on a forum, regulars know who’s going to speak like that but newbies don’t have a way to know that, adding a lol in there can show that and help stop threads being sidetracked into an argument with the original point being forgotten about, we’ve all seen that happen a few times, sometimes that can work well, others it can just lead to arguments and upset

Just my opinion lol

"

Exactly! And I get bored of using the smiley icon too.

"I tend to zone it out now.

It is rather over used though.

Agreed , it irritates me now"

Easily irritated, speaks volumes.

Nope, while not literally accurate to what you're doing while reading/ typing, it's definitely got a place to convey a feeling to a message; helping to reduce any serious tones for instance

I think I am hysterical so sometimes I am laughing at what I have said. Other times I'm merely amused.

What really grates on my brain though is llf (laugh like f*ck). I think it must be just a Belfast thing & it makes me cringe.

Stewarton

I remember a friend telling me his mum put lol at the end of a message telling him an auntie had died. When he asked why she had put lol on that message as he thought it was in bad taste and not her style . She was confused and said why wouldn't she say Lots Of Love... she was mortified when he replied what it also stood for and that actually it explained the frosty reaction she had had from some people .. and hurriedly had to text everyone she had messaged to tell them that she wasn't laughing at the news this woman had died ...luckily everyone was okay once it had been explained

I can't stop thinking about the LOL police doing a bust.

It just keeps tickling my funny bone and making me smile about banning the LOL at the end of people's sentences.

What would be the penalty for transgressing it ?

It's OK, with a name like that they would be too busy raiding themselves to get out of the station
