Somewhere In The Ether…

Being the reknowned and superlatively cultured fellow that I am (not to mention modest, of course.....and possibly a lying shitbag additionally), I love nothing more than a finely crafted and intellectually engaging Period Drama as we Brit’s are so adroit at producing.

Therefore come forth if you, like myself, similarly hold a joyous proclivity for the aforementioned and please list your all time favourites here

I’ll just end the thread here with Peaky Blinders. If that qualifies as a period drama.

Surprisingly, I am enjoying Vanity Fair at the moment and also loved War and Peace (OK,mostly because of James Norton)! In the past I rated the two BBC series of George Eliot's Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda. I still need to watch Peaky Blinders.

Sorry Dan, the end of the thread is here with Pride and Prejudice (the version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth).

Not only can you watch it multiple times (I have), it also bought us Bridget Jones - Helen Fielding not only stole the concept of her storyline from the book, she actually had Colin Firth in mind when describing Mark Darcy.

War and peace was magnificent.

Really enjoyed The crown.

Wuthering heights with Tom Hardy.

Oh and The virgin queen, that was pretty good too. I do like a bit of history

A hidden gem only recently discovered for me is Anthony Trollope’s ‘Barchester Chronicles’ (1982). Worth watching for the firecracker performance by Geraldine Mckewan alone! Also stars a very young Alan Rickman, whose character is called Obadiah Slope! A highly recommended retro series for those rainy afternoons!

It's of a certain period so I'd say it definitely qualifies. The whole premise of the series was the exploration of societal norms back then which still affect people today. Not just a brilliant period piece but one of the best TV shows ever made. Still grieving for it.

Incidentally, did anyone else here watch Dickensian, the series that aired about two years ago on BBC 1?

The notion of taking Dickens’ much loved characters from his many works and mixing them all into one story initially filled me with much dread but, much to my surprise, I really loved it. Any other fans?
