The right place

Even more than pictures I find I’m really attracted to some people by their ‘voice’ in the forums or in messages.

It also works the other way round too. The way in which people express themselves can attract or repell.

I don’t really have any question associated with this. Just sharing a thought.

I think you mean you like what they say?

But it does remind me of the old ‘voices’ thread where people uploaded their voices to YouTube etc so people actually could hear them! (and then all tried to put on their sexiest voice!!)

Maybe someone should reprise that!?

Yes by ‘voice’ I mean how people express themselves.

Not, about imagining what they sound like when they speak. Although I sometimes do that too. But it’s not what I had in mind.

I think it's a good way to see how someone interacts socially watching them on the forums. You can tell a lot about their character.

I think messages are more about interacting one to one and seeing if their style suits yours. The two can be very different.

I totally agree. We all have a certain 'voice' when we write. There's a 'music' and a 'rhythm' in the way we express ourselves. It's why certain writers appeal to us and some don't. It's not always what they're saying but how they're saying it that will appeal (or not). It's almost an unconscious thing that we pick up on. It can be a very attractive trait when you find someone who appeals to you in this way.

I understand what you are saying OP but it's a double edged sword isn't it?

Back in the day if you picked some one up in a nightclub/library/local kebab shop (delete as applicable) you didn't ask for their opinions on random shit/burning topics of the day or ask them to do a spelling and punctuation test.

You either fancied them or you didn't.

I don't believe you can accurately judge a persons character from text messages only several meets will get you to that and don't forget if you have a very negative approach to life you tend to read things into a message that wernt intentionally there, many texts can be read with ambiguity

Not all men - I’ve been very attracted to people before that society would call ugly, and the flip side - had the “corrrr look at that!!!” reaction when I’ve seen someone stunning, but within minutes of talking I’ve been seriously put off

Yeah I agree there is lack of tone etc and we do interpret things differently but I tend to look more at how they interact with others like do they engage with everyone, do they single out the ones they fancy, do they give their opinions honestly or are they easily swayed etc.

Not all men - I’ve been very attracted to people before that society would call ugly, and the flip side - had the “corrrr look at that!!!” reaction when I’ve seen someone stunning, but within minutes of talking I’ve been seriously put off "

My whole dating site profile was based on all the horror stories I heard about what some of 'dem crazy bitches' got up to lol! I was always left thinking 'Why, why would they bother!'

I guess psychology is a complex subject....

Some here are steadfast in their opinion and don't consider anyone else as having a valid point, they hit you with googled statistics ha, makes me laugh statistics are generally based on a very small selection of the population, also the negative topics seem to attract a lot of interest, I wonder if that comes from the philosophy whatever bad or corrupt in the world sells newspapers, me I like to see the lighter side of life , you're a long time dead

I've had my ups and downs on here... moments when I was charming and funny (I'd like to imagine haha) and moments where my pants fell down or I got too lost in arguing turgid stuff. I'm not sure how that reflects on me. But I'd like to imagine it makes me come across as a real person with depth and complexity. There are others on here who do better at maintaining a single persona. Perhaps because they are that way. Perhaps because they're better at vetting what they post. Personally, I don't need people to always be the same. I'm not so anal as to judge others based on a few posts. I get a feel for them over many posts, perhaps over several months. I think that's the "voice" you're talking about

You can get this from long messages too, for those not on the forum. Its amazing how much of someones character and humour can come through just with written words. A certain type of humour has me smitten even before meeting them, and then when you do meet to see that same 'voice' in the flesh is just lovely.

Yep, we’ve probably all had times when we post when we’re horny or bored or whatever, and we say things that only reflect as single dimension of our character. Over time though I think you build a picture of some of the more regular forum members.

Oh this definitely helps in me finding someone attractive.

If they come across well or have a good outlook on something, it always picques my interest.

If they always seem to want to wind someone up, be negative then I think that’s how they would be in real life too.

It’s a great filter...

The women I chat with off the forums often assume I have a posh voice. I think I've just got a "normal" accent free voice. I'm certainly not fruity.

On a recent WhatsApp chat she was so curious to hear me that we each recorded brief snippets of each other. It was amazing because in just a few seconds of her talking I could tell she was attractive to me and I think she got the same. So hearing voices can be a powerful way to get a sense of if there's likely to be attraction there.

You’ve omitted to mention those that think they’re suited to it when in fact they just like to see their own opinions and thoughts on the forum. They struggle with the concept they aren’t necessarily right and feel the need to belittle others should they say anything to the contrary

You can also tell from some when they are having a bad day or they are a little down. Their usual style changes. Even if they don't mention how they are feeling. The forums can sometimes be insightful

Voices be strong. I prefer my forum voice. There’s no lisp.

I’ve met forum folk based on their style, wit and intelligence on here. Luckily it transferred into actual conversation. I wouldn’t be inclined to actively meet the deliberately and frequently controversial posters though. We probably wouldn’t get on at all.

I used to work in a call centre many years ago. I once had a woman calling to make an order for her husband and proceeded to go on to tell me all about my lush sexy voice and how she would love to see what I looked like etc etc etc. I was only like 19/20 at the time and freaked right out lol.

Yes I totally get what you mean, some people’s character can certainly come through on the forums and works as an excellent filter. But I’ve definitely been interested in some people more through observing their interactions on the forums x

Oh yes. I don't spend enough time on the forums to have got everyone 'sussed' (rightly or wrongly) but after a while I definitely find myself thinking of a number of regulars according to the qualities their written words convey. So, I'll notice stuff like kindness, inclusivity, respect, maturity, wit, imagination, common sense or individuality, all of which are attractive to me and could potentially make me think 'hmmmm' if I also liked the look of them. Conversely, people whose contributions *repeatedly* (I accept anyone can have an off day) make them seem spiteful, rude, hypocritical, shit stirring or like a sheep whose opinions change from one hour to the next depending on who they're trying to arse lick at that moment, get consigned to the 'urrgghh' part of my head.

Having said all that, I'm sure my impression of an individual could be totally different to someone else's - we all have our own way of interpreting things, and that's before you factor in whether or not someone's deliberately trying to project a particular image of themselves. You can't tell for sure until you start messaging one to one, or get to meet them for real at an organised social for example. But I do think forum 'voices' are a good place to start ...

It's one of the main reasons I have mostly met and interact with forumites - the forums are a great way of hearing a person's "voice" outside of profile blurb or messages (both of which can be to an extent tailored) people tend to let their guard down more on the forums so you get a better picture of what they are truly like. Some of course do create a persona for themselves but for most you can at least get a flavour.

There are some popular and generally considered physically attractive forumites whose "voice" on the forums makes them quite the opposite to me - conversely there are those to which their "voice" forms part of the attraction.

Yep, I know what you mean Op! I think the people I have found attractive on the forum tend to share a particularly witty 'voice' which intrigues me and makes me want to know more.

I do think though people ascribe their own processing to forum posters 'voices' - what one sees as argumentative, another might read as curious. It's quite an interesting thing to read, that is the difference in the way people interpret posters and respond to them respective of that.

I agree with the op.

I find some of the less popular forum voices very attractive in a non sexual way. Some for their kindness, some for their intelligence and some for their humour. The people that stand out for me though are the ones that are consistent in their opinions regardless of the gender or attractiveness of those they're responding to and those who avoid sycophantic replies.

There are one or two people we've, er, "intellectually" pursued as they're our type, not just physically, but their voice, and haven't been disappointed.

There are one or two others we would like to meet, even if just socially, who we think we'd be friends with, but they're not looking for couples. Sadly we've never engaged with them.

Wonderful observation OP that I truly agree with. It’s brings character and depth to names and pictures, particularly as mentioned when that voice is consistent. And even when commenting on serious or humorous posts, if someone allows their true voice to shine through, you hear, you see their personality. I love that rounded picture, it really becomes 3 dimensional.
