Ok. Im a bit vague on the facts. But they are trialing this idea in my small town. In certain shops they are goiing to be opening check outs especially for the old and vulnerable where they can take there time packing and unpacking and will be able to spend time chatting to the cashier.

Sounds an excellent idea to me

I hope so. Those in a rush can get done quicker and those that aren't wont feel pressured into speeding up by people huffing behind them. Lots of people have little to no interaction and being able to spend a little time chatting and feeling less lonely will be great for them and hopefully give them something to look forward to, in turn keeping them more active by going to the shops. Well, in a perfect world at least.

I think it's a national trial, it was featured on out local news today too.

I work in a supermarket and would love to be on that checkout. I really enjoy being able to have a good natter with the customers and hate to rush them. For some people I may be the only person they speak to that day and the few extra minutes I can spend with them makes a world of difference.

those are my thoughts exactly the only time some come into contact with others is when they go shopping

I always try to use a manned till if there's one open, I'm neither old nor vulnerable, as I detest self service checkouts with a vengeance. I always have a chat to the cashier and take time to pack my stuff properly, even though I can pack it faster than the operator can scan it usually

Trials have been happening for the past few years but unlikely it will get rolled out fully despite being popular.

Management and targets. They've done it a few times where my mother works and since they had a massive redundancy spurge earlier this year and the new staffing system is in place, stores have a bare minimum number of staff in. They keep self scanners open, the kiosk and one other checkout if enough staff on or else the person in charge of self scanners has to jump between the scanners and a checkout.

Is it just me or do the cashiers have a little game where they try to scan your item's quicker than you can bag it?

They have to scan a minimum number of items in a minute and you'll pronably find there are a few in each store in competition with each other as to who has the highest scan rate for the week.

Can we also ask them to rollout some special checkouts for young and horny people to sit and flirt? That will be great.

I haven't seen this. What are the checkouts called? I'd hate to be standing in the old, lonely and vulnerable queue especially if I was.

My mum goes into Asda on her mobility scooter and a member of staff always approaches her and goes round taking things off the shelf for her, chatting while they do it. I was in a Co-op last week and an assistant was walking round with an elderly lady holding her basket and reading use by dates, asking her when she was going to eat the things etc.

I think some shops already make a big effort with people.

In fact our tesco has a meeter and greeter. Lovely girl but she has a habit of popping up out of nowhere to ask you how your day is

My parents get the bulk of their shopping delivered and the delivery person takes it in to the kitchen and puts it away. I think this is an excellent service, their last delivery charge was 50p and if they spend over £100 its free. My dad was especially pleased as the driver said because the crust on his apple pie was broken he would refund it

There and to the left a bit

Will this bring about a new audio warning..."Unexpected youngster in chatting area" if someone younger uses that checkout?

I'm sure if you asked nicely they would do it .

I think in part its a slightly cynical move on the part of big business to keep in front of their competitors. I also think theres a shift towards corporations taking social responsibility.
