A fleet of 35 French ships attack five English scallop vessels off the coast of Normandy. Ramming them and hurling missiles they manage to drive them off.

While i don't condone the excessive actions of the French fishermen, being familiar with the impact that quotas have (the English are under no such restrictions) i can't help but feel sorry for them.

Your thoughts on this please.

I've only just heard this story, as EU member states aren't members allowed t fish in one another's territorial waters? Or was there a bilateral agreement which stated that we and the french would keep to our own?

As a diver and snorkeler who has been all over the UK and Europe, yes even in the colder parts, to dive, before we discuss quotas we also need to discuss marine habitat management and better fish stock management.

The French have banned the French from fishing in French waters. So the British ships who are fishing legally are being rammed wholst the French Navy watch.

Well sadly for the French it's an agreement that there government has entered into. If they want to take issue with it then they should be taking issue with those in power who placed the restriction on them, not the English counter parts who are apparently entitled to fish those waters while the locals can't.

I do agree though that we over fish our waters and apparently other countries waters too, we really should protect this valuable natural resource a lot better. While we're guilty of contributing to the problem in the past we're slowly educating ourselves of the impact our every day lives have on the environment and we're doing our best to alter it to a minimum.

And purely on a joking note the French wouldn't have any waters to fish if the good old British army hadn't stepped in all those years ago

Seems odd that there were 4 uk ships and 35 French ships but the French are complaining about over fishing.

It looks like the French were looking to catch up in one night for their whole season off.

Apologies if this has been done elsewhere, to be honest i never look at the other forums.

I have no idea why the quotas are so different or who decided on them. It seems to me, though, that if we're to stand any hope of maintaining the marine environment and preserving fish stocks then surely we all have to play by the same rules.

"I once had my scallops squashed by a German woman wasn’t the worst of experiences "

A tale worthy of it's own thread, methinks.

From what I've read on the news sites, the French scallop season runs from November to February, while we can fish in the same waters all year round.

The French concern is that the British will overfish and there will not be any scallops left (not just for them this year, but in future years).

You would like to think that four of five boats wouldn't cause too much damage to stocks, but I'm sure we don't know the full story (I'm sure it's only being presented showing the British boats as being victims).

On the other hand; ramming boats, throwing stones and smoke flares is completely over the top and this can only be discussed sitting round a table, rather than on the water...
