Ferret. Had one as a kid. Better than any cat or dog. Avoid guinea pigs and rabbits, kids get bored of them.

Failing that go with walrus, very affectionate

Wasps, we found a nest in the loft so opened up the hatch and gave them free run of the house. We now live in a tent in the garden. It's brought us so much closer as a family.

A great compromise if different family members all want a different pet.

Personally I'd always go for an Aardvark. You'd get served first in the vets waiting room
